چکیده

We critically analyze reported measured values of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χð3Þ of bulk gold. Reported values of this quantity span a range of more than three orders of magnitude. Much of this variation results from the use of different measurement procedures which are sensitive to different contributions to the nonlinear optical response. For example, values measured through use of thirdharmonic generation or non-degenerate four-wave mixing tend to be significantly lower than those obtained from measurements of the intensity-dependent refractive index. We ascribe this behavior to the fact that the first two processes respond only to “instantaneous” nonlinearities, whereas the nonlinear refractive index has a contribution from the much stronger but much slower “hot electron,” or “Fermi-smearing” mechanism, which has a response time of the order of picoseconds. The data also reveal that the hot-electron contribution has a strong dependence on laser wavelength, because of the turn-on of the 5d to 6sp transition at about 550 nm. It is hoped that the compilation presented here will prove useful in establishing what value of χð3Þ is most appropriate for adoption under various laboratory conditions. & 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Investigation of the Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Susceptibilities and Nonlinear Refractive Index In Pbs/Cdse/Cds Spherical Quantum Dot

In this study the third order nonlinear susceptibilities are theoreticallycalculated for an electron confined in an isolated PbS/ CdSe/ CdS spherical core-shellshellquantum dots. Our calculation is associated with intersubband transitions in theconduction band. We used the effective mass approximation in this study which is asimple and straightforward study of the third-order optical nonlineari...

Third-order susceptibility of gold for ultrathin layers.

This Letter presents an experimental study of nonlinear plasmonic effects in gold-stripe waveguides. The optical characterization is performed by a picosecond laser and reveals two nonlinear effects related to propagation of long-range surface plasmon polaritons: nonlinear power transmission of plasmonic modes and spectral broadening of plasmonic modes. The experimental values of the third-orde...

Measurement of the complex nonlinear optical response of a surface plasmon-polariton.

We observe experimentally the self-phase modulation of a surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) propagating along a gold film bounded by air in a Kretschmann-Raether configuration. Through analyzing the power dependence of the reflectance curve as a function of the incidence angle, we characterize the complex-valued nonlinear propagation coefficient of the SPP. Moreover, we present a procedure that ca...

Nonlinear optical model for strip plasmonic waveguides

This paper presents a theoretical model of nonlinear optical properties for strip plasmonic waveguides. The particular waveguides geometry that we investigate contains a gold core, adhesion layers, and silicon dioxide cladding. It is shown that the third-order susceptibility of the gold core significantly depends on the layer thickness and has the dominant contribution to the effective third-or...
