The uses and abuses of thiopentone.

چکیده
THIOPENTONE has been described in such varying terms as a " godsend " and " too dangerous a drug for routine use ". Published figures show that in some centres in America it is used in between onequarter to one-half of all anaesthetics. In Britain thiopentone is more popular and it is safe to say that an intravenous thiobarbiturate is used for the induction of anaesthesia in more than three-quarters of all cases. In view of Gillespie's statement and our ever increasing knowledge of the action of thiopentone, it is timely to consider some of the uses and abuses of this commonly used drug.

Background: Induction of anesthesia in patients that undergo cardiac surgery has more risk than others, because of specific cardiovascular effects of the anesthetic drugs and the preoperative state of these patients, so the hemodynamic stability is very important in these patients. It seems that midazolam have less cardiovascular side effects than thiopentone. In this study, the effects of mid...
متن کاملTHE DILEMMA OF HEMODYNAMIC INSTABILITY DURING INDUCTION OF ANESTHESIA: CAN MIDAZOLAM SERVE AS A SUITABLE SUBSTITUTE FOR THIOPENTONE?
Both midazolam and thiopental sodium are being used as induction agents and for maintenance of anesthesia. In contrast to other benzodiazepines such as diazepam, midazolam has a rapid onset of action and fast distribution and causes few cardiovascular or respiratory effects. Being water soluble, midazolam is also associated with a low incidence of venous irritation. The purpose of this stu...
متن کاملUses and abuses of mathematics in biology.
In the physical sciences, mathematical theory and experimental investigation have always marched together. Mathematics has been less intrusive in the life sciences, possibly because they have until recently been largely descriptive, lacking the invariance principles and fundamental natural constants of physics. Increasingly in recent decades, however, mathematics has become pervasive in biology...
