Brief report: a comparison of the diagnostic criteria for Asperger syndrome.

چکیده
Asperger syndrome (AS) was first described under the title of autistic psychopathy by the Austrian physician Hans Asperger (1944). Despite the growing interest in it, its nosological status remains uncertain. It is not clear to what extent it differs from autism, although some authorities have proposed that it is part of the "autistic continuum" (Wing, 1981). The DSMIII-R (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1987) has no separate category for this disorder, and the DSM-IV has not yet decided whether or not to include it (APA, DSM-IV Options Book, 1991). However, the ICD-10 (World Health Organization [WHO], 1988) has included it as a distinct category within the pervasive developmental disorders, because it does not "fulfill the usual criteria for autism and because it remains uncertain whether or not the syndrome is truly synonymous with autism" (Rutter, 1989, p. 504). According to the ICD-10, AS is characterized by a qualitative impairment of reciprocal social interaction; a lack of clinically significant general delay in language or cognitive development; and restricted patterns of behavior and interests. In addition, the disorder is not attributable to the other varieties of pervasive developmental disorder (WHO, 1988). Most publications have not used any operational criteria for the diagnosis of AS while others have introduced substantial changes to the clinical features described by Asperger. For example, Asperger believed that the patients he described were of normal intelligence. However, some authors have since described patients of Asperger syndrome with mental

Brief report: a reappraisal of clumsiness as a diagnostic feature of Asperger syndrome.
Asperger syndrome, first described by the Austrian physician Hans Asperger (1944), is an uncommon disorder whose clinical features overlap with those of autism (Kanner, 1943) and schizoid personality disorder (Wolff & Barlow, 1979; Wolff & Chick, 1980). Some authorities regard it as part of the "autistic spectrum" (Wing, 1981), while others have argued for the need to separate it from autism (R...

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a disorder of early childhood characterized by autistic social deficits, subtle communication impairment, and excessive isolated interests. There is no history of language delay or of mental retardation. Despite its increasing popularity as a distinct condition, its diagnostic validity remains uncertain. It is still unclear to what extent AS differs from autism with no...
متن کاملDid Asperger's cases have Asperger disorder? A research note.
With publication of the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-IV), standardized criteria for Asperger Disorder, a putative subtype of Pervasive Developmental Disorder, are now available. This paper examines the four cases Asperger originally presented in his seminal paper (1991/1994), using DSM-IV criteria to determine whether a diagnosis of Autistic o...
متن کاملA Concise History of Asperger Syndrome: The Short Reign of a Troublesome Diagnosis
First described in 1944 by Hans Asperger (1944), it was not before 1994 that Asperger Syndrome (AS) was included in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, only to disappear in the Manual's fifth edition in 2013. During its brief existence as a diagnostic entity, AS aroused immense interest and controversy. Similar to patients with autism, AS patients sh...
