چکیده

A thorough search for Ultraluminous X-ray source candidates within the Local Volume is made. The search spatially matches potential ULXs detected in X-ray images or cataloged in the literature with galaxies tabulated in the Catalog of Neighboring Galaxies compiled by Karachentsev et al. (2004). The specific ULX frequency (occurrence rate per unit galaxy mass) is found to be a decreasing function of host galaxy mass for host masses above ∼10 M⊙. There is too little mass in galaxies below this point to determine if this trend continues to lower galaxy mass. No ULXs have yet been detected in lowermass galaxies. Systematic differences between dwarf and giant galaxies that may explain an abundance of ULXs in dwarf galaxies and what they may imply about the nature of ULXs are discussed. The Lack of Halo Ultraluminous X-ray Sources

The premise that Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) exist beyond the optical extent of nearby galaxies is investigated. A published catalog containing 41 ULX candidates located between 1 and ∼3 times the standard D25 isophotal radius of their putative host galaxies is examined. Twenty-one of these sources have spectroscopically-confirmed distances. All 21 are background objects giving a 95% pro...

A Chandra X-ray survey of nearby dwarf starburst galaxies: I. Data reduction and results

We present an analysis of Chandra X-ray observations of a sample of eight dwarf starburst galaxies (I Zw 18, VII Zw 403, NGC1569, NGC3077, NGC 4214, NGC4449, NGC5253, and He 2–10). Extended, diffuse X-ray emission is detected in all but two of the objects. Unresolved sources were found within all dwarf galaxies (total: 55 sources). These point sources are well fit by power law, thermal plasma, ...

A Chandra X-ray survey of nearby dwarf starburst galaxies: II. Starburst properties and outflows

We present a comprehensive comparison of the X-ray properties of a sample of eight dwarf starburst galaxies observed with Chandra (I Zw 18, VII Zw 403, NGC1569, NGC3077, NGC4214, NGC4449, NGC5253, He 2–10). In Paper I we presented in detail the data reduction and analysis of the individual galaxies. For the unresolved X-ray sources we find the following: point sources are in general located clo...

A Variable Ultraluminous Supersoft X-ray Source in “the Antennae”: Stellar-mass Black Hole or White Dwarf?

The Chandra monitoring observations of The Antennae (NGC 4038/39) have led to the discovery of a variable, luminous, supersoft source (SSS). This source is only detected at energies below 2 keV and, in 2002 May, reached count rates comparable to those of the nine ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) detected in these galaxies. Spectral fits of the SSS data give acceptable results only for a ∼100–...

Radio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source.

The physical nature of ultraluminous x-ray sources is uncertain. Stellar-mass black holes with beamed radiation and intermediate black holes with isotropic radiation are two plausible explanations. We discovered radio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 5408. The x-ray, radio, and optical fluxes as well as the x-ray spectral shape are consistent with be...
