چکیده

Theoretical studies show that in some combinatorial problems, there is a close relationship between classes of tractable instances and the treewidth (tw) of graphs describing their structure. In the case of satisfiability for quantified Boolean formulas (QBFs), tractable classes can be related to a generalization of treewidth, that we call quantified treewidth (twp). In this paper we investigate the practical relevance of computing twp for problem domains encoded as QBFs. We show that an approximation of twp is a predictor of empirical hardness, and that it is the only parameter among several other candidates which succeeds consistently in being so. We also provide evidence that QBF solvers benefit from a preprocessing phase geared towards reducing twp, and that such phase is a potential enabler for the solution of hard QBF encodings.

An Empirical Study of QBF Encodings: from Treewidth Estimation to Useful Preprocessing

From an empirical point of view, the hardness of quantified Boolean formulas (QBFs), can be characterized by the (in)ability of current state-of-the-art QBF solvers to decide about the truth of formulas given limited computational resources. In this paper, we start from the problem of computing empirical hardness markers, i.e., features that can discriminate between hard and easy QBFs, and we e...

SAT-Encodings for Special Treewidth and Pathwidth

Decomposition width parameters such as treewidth provide a measurement on the complexity of a graph. Finding a decomposition of smallest width is itself NP-hard but lends itself to a SAT-based solution. Previous work on treewidth, branchwidth and clique-width indicates that identifying a suitable characterization of the considered decomposition method is key for a practically feasible SAT-encod...

Encodings of Bounded Synthesis

The reactive synthesis problem is to compute a system satisfying a given specification in temporal logic. Bounded synthesis is the approach to bound the maximum size of the system that we accept as a solution to the reactive synthesis problem. As a result, bounded synthesis is decidable whenever the corresponding verification problem is decidable, and can be applied in settings where classic sy...

Characterising equilibrium logic and nested logic programs: Reductions and complexity,

Equilibrium logic is an approach to nonmonotonic reasoning that extends the stable-model and answer-set semantics for logic programs. In particular, it includes the general case of nested logic programs, where arbitrary Boolean combinations are permitted in heads and bodies of rules, as special kinds of theories. In this paper, we present polynomial reductions of the main reasoning tasks associ...

STRUQS: A Structural QBF Solver

In this note we describe STRUQS, a solver that approaches the problem of reasoning with quantified Boolean formulas (QBFs) by combining search and resolution, and by switching between them according to structural properties of QBFs. Here it is described the version submitted to the competitive evaluation of QBF solvers 2010 (QBFEVAL’10), and it is based on the work presented in [1], and extende...
