چکیده

It is well known that occupational exposure to pollens of flowering ornamental plants may elicit rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma, and contact urticaria (1). However, it was not until the 1980s that a foliage decorative plant, weeping fig (Ficus benjamina), was recognized as an important cause of occupational immediate mucosal and skin reactions, and, to a lesser degree, of similar symptoms in atopics which were nonoccupationally exposed (2, 3). A few species of the genus Yucca, which are also used as an ornamental indoor foliage plant in colder climates, have been reported to cause

Bloat Mitigation Potential of Plant Tannins and Yucca Extracts based on in Vitro Ruminal Fermentation and Methane Gas Production from Wheat Forage

Three commercial plant tannin and a yucca extract having different secondary compound profiles were simultaneously evaluated in vitro for their effects on ruminal methane gas production and rumen fermentation patterns of wheat forage. Overall objective was to quantify in vitro, the sources of tannins and dose levels of tannins and yucca extract on rate of gas production, ruminal fermentation, f...

First Recorded Observations of Pollination and Oviposition Behavior in Tegeticula antithetica (Lepidoptera: Prodoxidae) Suggest a Functional Basis for Coevolution With Joshua Tree (Yucca) Hosts

Yucca moths (Tegeticula spp.) are the exclusive pollinators of Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia s. l.). The moths actively pollinate the Joshua tree flowers and lay their eggs in the style. Recent studies have revealed that the plants commonly known as Joshua trees include two distinct, sister-species of plant: Yucca brevifolia Engelm. and Yucca jaegeriana McKelvey, each pollinated by two sister-...

Incidence of allergic contact sensitization in central Chinese subjects with chronic urticaria*

BACKGROUND Chronic urticaria (CU) can be provoked by a wide variety of causes. Some studies suggest contact sensitization may play a role in the disease. OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence and distribution characteristics of allergic contact sensitization in central Chinese subjects with CU, and assess contact allergen avoidance measures in managing CU. METHODS Patch tests were performe...

Plant Animal Interactions

Yucca moths are most well known for their obligate pollination mutualism with yuccas, where pollinator moths provide yuccas with pollen and, in exchange, the moth larvae feed on a subset of the developing yucca seeds. The pollinators, however, comprise only two of the three genera of yucca moths. Members of the third genus, Prodoxus, are the “bogus yucca moths” and are sister to the pollinator ...
