Miniconference on astrophysical jets
نویسنده
چکیده
This miniconference brought together observers of astrophysical jets, analytic and numerical modelers of both astrophysical jets and spheromaks, and laboratory experimentalists. The purpose of the miniconference was to encourage interaction between these diverse groups and also expose the plasma physics community to the interesting plasma issues associated with astrophysical jets. The miniconference emphasized magnetically driven astrophysical jets and consisted of three half-day sessions. The order of presentation was approximately: observations and general properties, experiments, numerical models, and special topics. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1900563g

The idea of a unified model for all astrophysical jets has been considered for quite some time. We present here a few scaling laws relevant to all type of astrophysical jets, analogous to those of Sams et al. (1996) which are widely used for astrophysical black holes. We use Buckingham's Π theorem of dimensional analysis to obtain a family of dimensional relations among the physical quantities ...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of High Mach Number Astrophysical Jets with Radiative Cooling
Computational fluid dynamics simulations using the WENO-LF method are applied to high Mach number nonrelativistic astrophysical jets, including the effects of radiative cooling. Our numerical methods have allowed us to simulate astrophysical jets at much higher Mach numbers than have been attained (Mach 20) in the literature. Our simulations of the HH 1-2 astrophysical jets are at Mach 80. Simu...

Computational fluid dynamics simulations using the WENO method and level set method are applied to high Mach number nonrelativistic astrophysical jets, including the effects of radiative cooling. WENO methods introduced in Liu et al. (J. Comput. Phys., 115:200–212, 1994) have allowed us to simulate HH 1-2 astrophysical jets at Mach number much higher than Mach 80 (Ha et al. in J. Sci. Comput. 2...
متن کاملOn the Speed of Astrophysical Jets
The evolution of the speed of astrophysical jets relative to the ambient medium is investigated using a simple model. We assume that a jet clump is under the influence of the relativistic tidal force of the central source as well as the plasma force due to the electromagnetic field of the ambient medium. The resulting equation of motion predicts that in time the speed of the clump tends to the ...
متن کاملViscoelastic Analogy for the Acceleration and Collimation of Astrophysical Jets
Jets are ubiquitous in astronomy. It has been conjectured that the existence of jets is intimately connected with the spin of the central object and the viscous angular momentum transport of the inner disk. Bipolar jet-like structures propelled by the viscous torque on a spinning central object are also known in a completely different context, namely the flow in the laboratory of a viscoelastic...
