چکیده

In this paper, the continuous adjointmethod to compute shape sensitivities in aerodynamic designwith turbulence modeling is described and developed. The focus is on compressible flows described by the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the classical Spalart–Allmaras model for turbulence. Turbulence modeling usually requires, in particular, computation of the distance to the surface. Here, this distance is incorporated to the system as a new variable, solving the Eikonal equation. The accuracy of the sensitivity derivatives obtained with the complete turbulent approach is assessed by comparison with finite difference computations and the classical continuous adjoint with frozen viscosity, showing substantial improvements in the convergence properties of the method and in the quality of the obtained gradients. The validity of the overall methodology is illustrated with several design examples, including the optimization of three-dimensional geometries in combination with advanced freeform techniques for mesh deformation.

Strategies for Solving High-Fidelity Aerodynamic Shape Optimization Problems

Aerodynamic shape optimization based on high-fidelity models is a computational intensive endeavor. The majority of the computational time is spent in the flow solver, and in the gradient calculation. In this paper, we present two approaches for reducing the overall computational cost of the optimization. The techniques are tested using the Common Research Model wing benchmark defined by the Ae...

Optimization of Airfoils Using the Adjoint Approach and the Influence of Adjoint Turbulent Viscosity

The adjoint approach in gradient-based optimization combined with computational fluid dynamics is commonly applied in various engineering fields. In this work, the gradients are used for the design of a two-dimensional airfoil shape, where the aim is a change in lift and drag coefficient, respectively, to a given target value. The optimizations use the unconstrained quasi-Newton method with an ...
