چکیده

This paper discusses some pragmatic issues on the analogical constraint mapping engine (ACME), a widely used artificial neural network model for analogical matching employing Grossbergs IAC (interactive Activation and Competition) artificial neural network model. Our analysis beings with an investigation into the use of a Hopfield constraint satisfaction network for image reconstruction. This domain providing us with a constraint satisfaction network based on the more usual Hopfield model, but which shares many characteristics with the ACME model. Based on this comparison we demonstrate how the convergence time increases exponentially with increasing network size, a factor which has serious implications for the practical application of this model to all but trivially small metaphors. Finally, we briefly present a localist connectionist model for solution generation in one domain, with linear scaleability over problem size.

If Saddam Is Hitler Then Who Is George Bush? Analogical Mapping Between Systems of Social Roles

The analogy between World War II and the 1991 Persian Gulf crisis led people to construct a coherent system of roles for the participants in the Gulf crisis. The Analogical Constraint Mapping Engine (ACME), a model of analogical mapping by constraint satisfaction (Holyoak & Thagard, 1989), makes predictions about the types of correspondences people are likely to draw between the people and coun...

Constraints on Analogical Mapping: A Comparison of Three Models

Three theories of analogy have been proposed that are supported by computational models and data from experiments on human analogical abilities. In this article we show how these theories can be unified within a common metatheoretical framework that distinguishes among levels of informational, behavioral, and hardware constraints. This framework clarifies the distinctions among three computatio...

Pragmatics in analogical mapping.

Theories of analogical reasoning differ in the roles they ascribe to pragmatic factors as a source of constraints on analogical mappings. The multiconstraint theory as instantiated in the ACME model (Holyoak & Thagard, 1989a) claims that pragmatic constraints interact with structural and semantic constraints within the mapping stage itself, in addition to influencing pre-mapping and post-mappin...

Chemical Analogies: Two Kinds of Explanation

Analogies are often used to help provide explanations of unfamiliar phenomena by comparing them to familiar phenomena. Analogical explanations are of two kinds: ones that provide systematic clarification, and ones that give a causal account of why something happened. We describe a theory and implementation of analogical mapping that applies to both kinds of explanation. The theory says that the...
