The Pazner-Schmeidler Social Ordering: A Defense∗
نویسنده
چکیده
It is shown that the Pazner-Schmeidler social ordering appears as a very natural solution to the problem of deÞning social preferences over distributions of a Þxed bundle of divisible goods. The paper follows an approach to preference aggregation which relies only on interpersonally non-comparable preferences, and circumvents Arrows impossibility by taking account of the shape of indifference curves. Social preferences can then be constructed and justiÞed with fairness principles. JEL ClassiÞcation: D63, D71.

Two criteria for social decisions
This paper studies the ethical underpinnings of two social criteria which are prominent in the literature dealing with the problem of evaluating allocations of several consumption goods in a population with heteregenous preferences. The Pazner-Schmeidler criterion (PaznerSchmeidler [22]) and the Walrasian criterion (Fleurbaey and Maniquet [7]) are prima facie quite different. But it is shown he...
متن کاملEgalitarian-equivalence and the Pareto principle for social preferences
When we construct social preferences, the Pareto principle is often in conflict with the equity criteria: there exist two allocations x and y such that x Pareto dominates y, but y is an equitable allocation whereas x is not. The efficiency-first principle requires to rank an allocation x higher than y if (i) x Pareto dominates y or (ii) x and y are Pareto-noncomparable and x is equitable wherea...

متن کاملEquity in Production Economies with Dedicated Factors
In this paper I consider the problem of determining an equitable allocation of resources in production economies in which factors must be dedicated to production. That is, although they might be used to produce various consumption goods, they cannot be consumed directly. I rst establish that in such economies, envy-free and e¢ cient allocations exist under standard assumptions, whereas that is...
