Social Learning from Early Buyer Reviews: Implications for New Product Launch
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate the implications of social learning on a monopolist firm’s pricing and inventory decisions. In our model, customers who purchase the product early in the selling season report their ex-post opinions of product quality through buyer reviews, while customers remaining in the market observe these reviews before making purchasing decisions. Because customers are heterogeneous in their preferences, inferring product quality from buyer reviews is challenging. We consider two modes of social learning: perfect (Bayesian) and imperfect (motivated by empirical evidence). Our analysis illustrates that, apart from extracting revenue, price influences both the amount of information made available to potential customers, as well as its content, thereby modulating the social learning process. We find that even though learning from buyer reviews is rational for individual customers, aggregate customer surplus typically decreases in the presence of social learning. Consistent with anecdotal evidence, we show that, when social learning is imperfect, the firm may deliberately induce an early supply shortage in order to achieve increased overall product adoption. In addition, we demonstrate that optimal inventory management may allow the firm to approximate dynamic pricing outcomes while charging a fixed price.

Structuring Supplier Involvement in New Product Development: A China-U.S. Study
Buying and supplying organizations rely on each other for developing better products in an efficient manner, which explains the popularity of involving suppliers in new product development (NPD). However, such involvement is not always successful, partially due to the challenges of structuring a buyer–supplier team to manage joint dependence and dependence asymmetry. This study adopts an organi...
متن کاملScarcity Strategies Under Quasi-Bayesian Social Learning
This paper proposes a theory of firm-induced scarcity in the early stages of a new product’s selling season. By restricting supply, the firm induces self-selection of customers who are likely to generate the most positive product reviews; this can be advantageous for the firm if, as suggested by existing empirical evidence, subsequent consumers do not appropriately account for the selection bia...
متن کاملSocial Learning and the Design of New Experience Goods
Consumers often consult the reviews of their peers before deciding whether to purchase a new experience good; however, their initial quality expectations are typically set by the product’s observable attributes. This paper focuses on the implications of social learning for a monopolist firm’s choice of product design. In our model, the firm’s design choice determines the product’s ex ante expec...
