After the Crash – Lessons from Chronic Laminitis
نویسنده
چکیده
The internal, anatomical disintegration of the hoof, which accompanies the acute episode, is initially, invisible to the naked eye. With the passage of time however the hoof begins to display the effects wrought upon on it by the pathology of the acute phase. If the initial lamellar pathology is mild the clinical signs of laminitis may abate as the distal phalanx lamellar attachment apparatus repairs. Horses recovering from even the mildest laminitis should be rested and observed closely. If no radiographic evidence of palmar displacement of the distal phalanx within the hoof capsule exists, and the digital pulse is not palpably exaggerated 48 hours after treatment has ceased, the horse can be cautiously returned to its usual function. However if lameness persists and worsens this means that there is on-going displacement of the distal phalanx within the hoof capsule. This process of increasing chronicity after the crash needs to be understood to if we are to care for foundered horses effectively.

Comparison of first and second acupuncture treatments in horses with chronic laminitis
Background: Laminitis is a common but critical disease that causes severe pain and disability in horses. The etiology and pathogenesis of laminitis remain inconclusive and a multimodal therapeutic approach is generally indicated. Acupuncture has been used as a treatment option; however, the required number of treatments is still controversial due to the lack of objective scient...
متن کاملPyrosequencing of 16S rRNA genes in fecal samples reveals high diversity of hindgut microflora in horses and potential links to chronic laminitis
BACKGROUND The nutrition and health of horses is closely tied to their gastrointestinal microflora. Gut bacteria break down plant structural carbohydrates and produce volatile fatty acids, which are a major source of energy for horses. Bacterial communities are also essential for maintaining gut homeostasis and have been hypothesized to contribute to various diseases including laminitis. We per...

Data from 107 cases of pasture-associated laminitis were obtained from first opinion practices to study factors associated with severity, survival and return to ridden exercise. There were 43 mares and 64 geldings, with a median age of 11 years. Of the 107 animals, 33 were small ponies, 45 were large ponies/cobs, 17 were small horses and 12 were large horses. Ninetyseven animals were categorise...
متن کاملPlasma proteomics shows an elevation of the anti-inflammatory protein APOA-IV in chronic equine laminitis
BACKGROUND Equine laminitis is a devastating disease that causes severe pain in afflicted horses and places a major economic burden on the horse industry. In acute laminitis, the disintegration of the dermal-epidermal junction can cause the third phalanx to detach from the hoof wall, leaving the horse unable to bear weight on the affected limbs. Horses that survive the acute phase transition in...
متن کاملType VII and XVII Collagen mRNA Expressions in Regenerated Epidermal Laminae in Chronic Equine Laminitis
To confirm ability forming the basement membrane of the regenerated laminar epidermis (rLE) in chronic laminitis, expression of type VII and type XVII collagen mRNAs in the rLE was studied applying sequences of two type of murine collagens. On northern blot analysis, complement DNA (cDNA) probes adjusted from the murine type VII and type XVII collagen could hybridize with the equine mRNAs, and ...
