چکیده

The Open Spectrum approach to spectrum access can achieve near-optimal utilization by allowing devices to sense and utilize available spectrum opportunistically. However, a naive distributed spectrum assignment can lead to significant interference between devices. In this paper, we define a general framework that defines the spectrum access problem for several definitions of overall system utility. By reducing the allocation problem to a variant of the graph coloring problem, we show that the global optimization problem is NP-hard, and provide a general approximation methodology through vertex labeling. We examine both a centralized strategy, where a central server calculates an allocation assignment based on global knowledge, and a distributed approach, where devices collaborate to negotiate local channel assignments towards global optimization. Our experimental results show that our allocation algorithms can dramatically reduce interference and improve throughput (as much as 12-fold). Further simulations show that our distributed algorithms generate allocation assignments similar in quality to our centralized algorithms using global knowledge, while ∗ A part of this work has been presented at IEEE International conference on communications (ICC), May, 2005. Distributed Opportunistic Channel Acquisition Mechanism in Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks

We present a distributed opportunistic channel acquisition mechanism in dynamic spectrum access (DSA) networks. A novel graph-multicoloring algorithm is proposed for secondary networks, in which, each network makes use only of the local topology information (i.e., information about itself and its one-hop neighbors) to resolve contentions during channel access. We show that the proposed algorith...

Spectrum Assignment in Cognitive Radio Networks Using Fuzzy Logic Empowered Ants

The prevalent communications networks suffer from lack of spectrum and spectrum inefficiency. This has motivated researchers to develop cognitive radio (CR) as a smart and dynamic radio access promised solution. A major challenge to this new technology is how to make fair assignment of available spectrum to unlicensed users, particularly for smart grids communication. This paper introduces an i...

Quality-of-service-aware weighted-fair medium access control protocol for coexisting cognitive radio networks

Opportunistic usage selection of a licensed channel by a secondary user (SU) and its contention for data transmission is a challenging problem in coexisting cognitive radio network (CCRN). This is caused by the presence of many SUs from different CRNs in a shared environment, and the problem is further intensified when the user applications, with heterogeneous quality-of-service (QoS) requireme...
