چکیده

The ability of a Salmonella tennessee strain to ferment both lactose and sucrose was attributed to a conjugally transmissible plasmid, deoxyribonucleic acid molecular weight 164 x 10(6), bearing the genetic determinants of both fermentation characters.

Lactose-fermenting Salmonella.

Salmonella species are generally considered to be unable to ferment lactose and sucrose according to Bergey's Manual. Recently, however, J. M. Bulmash, McD. Fulton, and J. Jiron (J. Bacteriol. 89:259, 1965) and L. J. Kunz and W. H. Ewing (J. Bacteriol. 89:1629, 1965) have reported two separate species of Salmonella capable of fermenting lactose and sucrose. The organism reported here again illu...

Fermentation of raffinose by lactose-fermenting strains of Yersinia enterocolitica and by sucrose-fermenting strains of Escherichia coli.

Introduction of plasmids carrying the lacY gene (lactose permease gene) into Yersinia enterocolitica results in cells being able to ferment both lactose and raffinose. Transfer of such plasmids into Escherichia coli C600 (lacY) confers ability to ferment lactose but not raffinose. Derivatives of C600 that ferment both lactose and sucrose (Lac+ Scr+ strains) are able to ferment raffinose, but do...

pJT2: unusual H1 plasmid in a highly virulent lactose-positive and chloramphenicol-resistant Salmonella typhimurium strain from calves.

A lactose-positive and chloramphenicol-resistant strain of Salmonella typhimurium of high virulence was isolated from an outbreak of enteric and septicemic salmonellosis in veal calves. the lactose-positive marker was located on an H1 plasmid, pJT2, together with resistance to chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamides, and tetracycline, pJT2 was unusually large and had a molecular weight of a...

Procedure for identifying nonsense mutations.

A method has been devised for the rapid identification of nonsense mutations (UAG, UAA, UGA codons) in Salmonella. The mutations to be tested are reverted, and the revertants are replica-printed onto lactose plates spread with lawns of tester strains. These tester strains contain F' lac episomes with nonsense mutations in the episomal Z gene. The revertants are infected with the episome from th...

A simple medium for the rapid detection of Salmonella-like paracolon organisms.

Routine investigation of faeces frequently yields paracolon bacilli some of which after 24 hours' incubation produce the biochemical reactions of the salmonella group. Usually these " salmonellalike " paracolon bacilli can be distinguished from salmonellae by negative serological findings and, later, by the delayed fermentation of lactose, sucrose, or salicin. Occasionally, however, they may co...
