Acceleration of uncertainty updating in the description of transport processes in heterogeneous materials

چکیده
The prediction of thermo-mechanical behaviour of heterogeneous materials such as heat and moisture transport is strongly influenced by the uncertainty in parameters. Such materials occur e.g. in historic buildings, and the durability assessment of these therefore needs a reliable and probabilistic simulation of transport processes, which is related to the suitable identification of material parameters. In order to include expert knowledge as well as experimental results, one can employ an updating procedure such as Bayesian inference. The classical probabilistic setting of the identification process in Bayes’s form requires the solution of a stochastic forward problem via computationally expensive sampling techniques, which makes the method almost impractical. In this paper novel stochastic computational techniques such as the stochastic Galerkin method are applied in order to accelerate the updating procedure. The idea is to replace the computationally expensive forward simulation via the conventional finite element (FE) method by the evaluation of a polynomial chaos expansion (PCE). Such an approximation of the FE model for the forward simulation perfectly suits the Bayesian updating. The presented uncertainty updating techniques are applied to the numerical model of coupled heat and moisture transport in heterogeneous materials ∗Corresponding author. Uncertainty Updating in the Description of Coupled Heat and Moisture Transport in Heterogeneous Materials
To assess the durability of structures, heat and moisture transport need to be analyzed. To provide a reliable estimation of heat and moisture distribution in a certain structure, one needs to include all available information about the loading conditions and material parameters. Moreover, the information should be accompanied by a corresponding evaluation of its credibility. Here, the Bayesian...
متن کاملDAMAGE IDENTIFICATION OF TRUSSES BY FINITE ELEMENT MODEL UPDATING USING AN ENHANCED LEVENBERG-MARQUARDT ALGORITHM
This paper presents an efficient method for updating the structural finite element model. Model updating is performed through minimizing the difference of recorded acceleration of real damaged structure and hypothetical damaged structure, by updating physical parameters in each phase using iterative process of Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. This algorithm is based on sensitivity analysis and pr...
متن کاملA dynamic lattice model for heterogeneous materials
In this paper, the mechanical behavior of three-phase inhomogeneous materials is modeled using the meso-scale model with lattice beams for static and dynamic analyses. The Timoshenko beam theory is applied instead of the classical Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and the mechanical properties of lattice beam connection are derived based on the continuum medium using the non-local continuum theory. T...

In applications there occur different forms of uncertainty. The twomost important types are randomness (stochastic variability) and imprecision(fuzziness). In modelling, the dominating concept to describe uncertainty isusing stochastic models which are based on probability. However, fuzzinessis not stochastic in nature and therefore it is not considered in probabilisticmodels.Since many years t...
متن کاملTHEORY, EXPERIMENT AND PRACTICE OF SLAG ATTACK OF REFRACTORIES
Penetration and dissolution mechanisms are reviewed for predominantly single-phase oxide, two phase oxide and oxide-carbon composite refractories by liquid silicate slags. Theoretical models of these processes, as well as static (sessile drop, dipping and crucible) and dynamic (rotating finger and rotary slag) experimental tests, along with their practical limitations are considered. Direct (co...
