چکیده

The recent identification of new biological markers (biomarkers) has created unprecedented opportunities for molecular or biochemical epidemiologists in cancer mesearch. Laboratory measurements used with traditional methods of epidemiology have undisputedly added a new dimension to studies of causal associations. Although the technological arm of molecular on biochernicab epidemiology has grown rapidly, a need still exists for increasing technology transfer from the laboratory to human studies. To date, major research activities have been directed toward biomarker assay development without extending efforts to establish validity in human populations. Of equal concern is the question of the biological relevance of measurements to the processes of carcinogenesis. Similarly, the reported wide ranges of variability in individuals and laboratories as well as the lack of modified statistical methods for data intenpretation must be continually addressed. These issues pose a compelling challenge in the continued development and expansion of molecular cancer epidemiology. To this end, the National Cancer Institute sponsored an advisory workshop on applications of moleculan/biochemical epidemiology in cancer research on October 31, 1991, in Kona, Hawaii. With the cooperation of the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the National Center for Toxicological Research, the meeting

Characterizing the Validity and Real-World Utility of Health Technology Assessments in Healthcare: Future Directions; Comment on “Problems and Promises of Health Technologies: The Role of Early Health Economic Modelling”

With their article, Grutters et al raise an important question: What do successful health technology assessments (HTAs) look like, and what is their real-world utility in decision-making? While many HTAs are published in peer-reviewed journals, many are considered proprietary and their attributes remain confidential, limiting researchers’ ability to answer these questio...

A Review of Microsatellite Marker Usage in the Assessment of Genetic Diversity of Camelus

Camels have been regarded as the desert ship and they play multi-utility role in the world. Estimation of genetic parameters is foremost step towards managing the genetic resources for their conservation and sustainable utilization. Microsatellite markers have been extensively used in cattle, sheep, goat and camels. However, genetic characterization studies on camels has been poorly recorded. T...

Design and analysis issues in gene and environment studies

Both nurture (environmental) and nature (genetic factors) play an important role in human disease etiology. Traditionally, these effects have been thought of as independent. This perspective is ill informed for non-mendelian complex disorders which result as an interaction between genetics and environment. To understand health and disease we must study how nature and nurture interact. Recent ad...
