Extrasolar Planets Jonathan I

چکیده
NOTES: (a) JWST numbers appropriate to the assumptions in their updated Science Requirements Document must be calculated; (b) the GSMT sensitivity calculations must be ‘scrubbed’ to ensure that the assumptions re detectors; atmosphere; emissivity are duly conservative; and (c) the expected. performance of the JWST NIR coronagraph needs to be folded in. Please review with these caveats in mind (SES).

Indirect observation of the extrasolar planetes
Astronomical observations provide evidence of extrasolar planets. Planets orbiting a star other than the Sun were first discovered in 1992. Wolszczan & Frail (1992) found a periodic delay in the pulses of the radio emission from a pulsar, indicating that two planetary-mass objects orbit a pulsar PSR 1257+12. Since then, more than 240 extrasolar planets have been found. As discussed below, extra...
متن کاملAtmospheres of Extrasolar Giant Planets
The key to understanding an extrasolar giant planet’s spectrum–and hence its detectability and evolution–lies with its atmosphere. Now that direct observations of thermal emission from extrasolar giant planets are in hand, atmosphere models can be used to constrain atmospheric composition, thermal structure, and ultimately the formation and evolution of detected planets. We review the important...
متن کاملThe Structure of Jupiter, Saturn, and Exoplanets: Key Questions for High-Pressure Experiments
We give an overview of our current understanding of the structure of gas giant planets, from Jupiter and Saturn to extrasolar giant planets. We focus on addressing what high-pressure laboratory experiments on hydrogen and helium can help to elucidate about the structure of these planets. Subject headings: planetary systems, Jupiter, Saturn
متن کاملExtrasolar Planet Orbits and Eccentricities
The known extrasolar planets exhibit many interesting and surprising features—extremely shortperiod orbits, high-eccentricity orbits, mean-motion and secular resonances, etc.—and have dramatically expanded our appreciation of the diversity of possible planetary systems. In this review we summarize the orbital properties of extrasolar planets. One of the most remarkable features of extrasolar pl...
متن کاملRemote sensing of planetary properties and biosignatures on extrasolar terrestrial planets.
The major goals of NASA's Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) and the European Space Agency's Darwin missions are to detect terrestrial-sized extrasolar planets directly and to seek spectroscopic evidence of habitable conditions and life. Here we recommend wavelength ranges and spectral features for these missions. We assess known spectroscopic molecular band features of Earth, Venus, and Mars in t...
