Plant Physiology: Redefining the Enigma of Metabolism in Stomatal Movement
نویسنده
چکیده
Stomata open at the leaf epidermis, driven by solute accumulation in the surrounding guard cells. Transmembrane ion transport has long been recognised to contribute to this process. A new study makes it clear that guard cells also metabolise starch to accelerate opening.

Light and stomatal metabolism : I. Possible involvement of light modulation of enzymes in stomatal movement.
New evidence is provided regarding the direct effect of light on stomatal opening in the epidermis of the pea (Pisum sativum L. var Little Marvel) leaf. Light modulates the activity of a number of key enzymes involved in stomatal metabolism. When isolated epidermal strips are illuminated, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, NADP-malate dehydrogenase, and NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase are activated...

متن کاملStomatal Density as a Selection Criterion for Developing Tea Varieties with High Physiological Efficiency
Stomata, the small opening in leaf connecting plant with atmosphere, play pivotal roles in global water and carbon cycles. Stomata regulate the two key important physiological functions viz. photosynthesis and transpiration and thus are crucial for performance of crop species in changing climatic conditions. Although environmental factors influence the density and size of stomata, the genetic c...

This paper describes the second half of a series of tests of the photosynthetic theory of stomatal movement. A corollary of this theory is that any agent that inhibits photosynthesis should prevent opening or cause closure in light-unless some other action prevents this. It has been reported that this relationship does not hold either in wilting or under the action of chloroform (WILSON, 14). T...
متن کاملStomatal Movement in Response to Root Zone Temperature in Purple Heart (Tradescantia pallida)
The effects of root temperatures (25, 35 and 45°C) and temperature duration (30, 60 and 90 min) on net photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate in Tradescantia pallida were investigated. The experiment was conducted under controlled conditions with factorial arrangement based on a completely randomized design (CRD) and four replications. Result showed that, net photosynt...
