Seismogenic properties of the crust inferred from recent studies of reservoir-induced seismicity – Application to Koyna

چکیده
Recent studies of reservoir-induced seismicity have led to a better understanding of the seismogenic crust. These studies reveal that many parts of the seismogenic crust are critically stressed and small strength changes induced by reservoir impoundment can lead to seismicity. In the vicinity of the reservoir impoundment causes an immediate undrained response to the loading, and a delayed response due to the diffusion of pore pressure. Analytical calculations of strength changes at Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina show that diffusion is the predominant mechanism in triggering seismicity. Seismicity associated with pore pressure diffusion occurs in a crust with seismogenic permeability, ks, ~ 2 to 200 mD. Analyses of seismicity data at Koyna reveal that the rocks may have stressmemory (they remember the largest load that they were subjected to), and that seismicity occurs within a block enclosed by NNE-SSW trending Koyna River fault zone on the west, NE-SW trending Patan fault and a subsidiary fault on the east and a series of NWSE trending faults to the north and south. Continued monitoring of water levels in observation wells and their correlations with lake levels will likely produce the next breakthrough in understanding the protracted seismicity in the Koyna–Warna area.

Seismotectonics of the Koyna-Warna Area, India
Reservoir-induced seismicity has been observed near Koyna Dam, India since the early 1960s. In order to understand the seismotectonics of the region we analyzed available seismicity data from 1963 to 1995. Over 300 earthquakes with M]3.0 were relocated using revised location parameters (station locations, velocity model, station delays and Vp /Vs ratio). The spatial pattern of earthquakes was i...

S U M M A R Y The geographical distribution of the (1981–2005) seismicity in southern California forms a ±150 km broad zone adjacent to the Pacific–North America plate boundary, ranging from depths of ∼1–∼30 km, with the bulk of the focal depths in the range of 2–12 km. The distribution of the seismicity that includes both mainshock–aftershock sequences and background events is affected by both...
متن کاملMechanism of Initial Seismicity Following Impoundment of the Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina
Induced seismicity has been observed near Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina, since December 1977. Deployment of a seismic network before impoundment allowed for detection and accurate location of pursuant seismicity since its inception. Corroborative fault-plane solutions, together with geological and borehole data on fracture orientations, made it possible to determine the structures associ...
متن کاملPreliminary evaluation of induced seismicity at the Karkheh dam site in southwest Iran
The reservoir-induced seismicity (RIS) at the Karkheh dam site with a reservoir capacity of about 7.4x109 meters is investigated. Based on the assessment of the seismicity of the dam site in equal time periods before and after reservoir impoundment, it was found that the number of earthquakes have been tripled after impoundment, while their magnitudes and focal depths become smaller. The averag...
متن کاملSeismic hazard assessment of Koyna region, Peninsular India: using geospatial approach
Background: Earthquake-prone regions from the stable continental regions (like Peninsular India) warrant total seismic hazard estimation from possible sources — reservoir induced or tectonic. The Koyna region falls in the so-called stable continental region, though previously considered as aseismic because of its location in the Peninsular India, which was argued to be the continental Shield re...
