Lake shore deterioration, reed management and bank restoration in some Central European lakes
نویسندگان
چکیده
The causes of lakeshore deterioration and reed decline are concisely summarised, and demonstrated with examples of seven Central European lakes (Germany: Havellakes, Lake Constance-Untersee, Lake Constance-Obersee; Switzerland: Lake Zurich, Lake Biel, Lake Neuchiitel, Lake Geneva). The main causes are assumed to be bank erosion, lake eutrophication, mechanical damage to the reeds, and recreational activities. Countermeasures can be grouped into: reed protection against mechanical load (fences), wave dissipative constructions (refilling of substrate, brushwood fascine), nutrient export from the reeds (winter mowing), and supplementary measures (reed plantations, prohibition of access for the public). Favourable issues and undesired results are discussed. It is stated that there is a need for fundamental research and scientific surveillance of the restoration measures to avoid ill effects in the future.

Lake Trout in the Great Lakes: History, Molecular Genetics, Physiology, Strain Comparisons, and Restoration Management
This paper reviews historical differences among native lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) populations, genetic comparisons of populations, heritability of physiological traits, performance of strains after stocking, and the role of genetics in management. Differences among lake trout were historically recognized by aborignal people, Jesuit missionaries, and French voyageurs, and later by natural...
متن کاملLake Restoration and Management in a Climate Change Perspective: An Introduction
Lakes all around the globe are under severe pressure due to an increasing anthropogenic impact from a growing population in a more developed world. Accordingly, today, many lakes are highly eutrophic and suffer from severe blooms of often toxic cyanobacteria and may become even more eutrophic in the future unless strong lake management actions are taken. Recent research has further shown that g...

Definition: The term “lake effect” generally refers to the effect of any lake in modifying the weather about its shore and for some distance downwind. In the United States, this term is applied specifically to the region about the Great Lakes or the Great Salt Lake. More specifically, lake effect often refers to the generation of sometimes spectacular snowfall amounts to the lee of the Great La...
متن کاملChemical Indicators of Anthropogenic Impacts on the Plitvice Lakes (Croatia) - Lessons for Lake Conservation and Environmental Management
The Plitvice Lakes National Park is situated in a pristine and sparsely populated area of the northwestern Dinarides, central Croatia. The basic geomorphological phenomenon of the Park consists of 16 karst lakes interconnected by numerous cascades and waterfalls, formed by travertine barriers. During the last century the area experienced significant changes regarding the prevailing anthropogeni...

This article starts with a brief description of the origin and eutrophication of shallow Dutch lakes, followed by a review of the various lake restoration techniques in use and the results obtained. Most freshwater lakes in the Netherlands are very shallow (<2 m), and owe their origins to large-scale dredging and removal of peat during the early 17th century. They vary in area from a few hectar...
