Improving TCP Congestion Control over Internets with Heterogeneous Transmission Media

چکیده
We present a new implementation of TCP that is better suited to today’s Internet than TCP Reno or Tahoe. Our implementation of TCP, which we call TCP Santa Cruz, is designed to work with path asymmetries, out-of-order packet delivery, and networks with lossy links, limited bandwidth and dynamic changes in delay. The new congestion-control and error-recovery mechanisms in TCP Santa Cruz are based on: using estimates of delay along the forward path, rather than the round-trip delay; reaching a target operating point for the number of packets in the bottleneck of the connection, without congesting the network; and making resilient use of any acknowledgments received over a window, rather than increasing the congestion window by counting the number of returned acknowledgments. We compare TCP Santa Cruz with the Reno and Vegas implementations using the ns2 simulator. The simulation experiments show that TCP Santa Cruz achieves significantly higher throughput, smaller delays, and smaller delay variances than Reno and Vegas. TCP Santa Cruz is also shown to prevent the swings in the size of the congestion window that typify TCP Reno and Tahoe traffic, and to determine the direction of congestion in the network and isolate the forward throughput from events on the reverse path. 1 Introdu tion

An Evaluation of Multi-path Transmission Control Protocol (M/TCP) with Robust Acknowledgement Schemes
We present a new end-to-end transport protocol called Multipath Transmission Control Protocol (M/TCP) and its robust acknowledgement (ACK) schemes. M/TCP is designed as an alternative TCP option to improve reliability and performance of today’s Internet. M/TCP allows a sender to simultaneously transmit data via multiple controlled paths to the same destination. The protocol requires no modifica...
متن کاملOn TCP Performance in an Heterogeneous Network: A Survey
The new transmission media used to transport Internet tra c present di erent characteristics from the network TCP is tuned to. This results in a degradation in the performance of the protocol in terms of resource utlization and transfer delay. Many works have studied the performance of the protocol over these new transmission media. The majority of these works were interested in a particular en...
متن کاملTCP BaLDE for Improving TCP Performance over Heterogeneous Networks
Network congestion and random errors of wireless link are two well-known noteworthy parameters which degrade the TCP performance over heterogeneous networks. We put forward a novel end-to-end TCP congestion control mechanism, namely TCP BaLDE (Bandwidth and Loss Differentiation Estimate), in which the TCP congestion control categorizes the reason of the packet loss by estimating loss differenti...
متن کاملPerformance Optimization of Transmission Control Protocol in Heterogeneous Wireless Network during Mobility
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has shown serious performance limitations on wireless media. The main causes of these limitations have their root in mobility and link characteristics of wireless media. Heterogeneous environment of multiple radio-access technologies generally increases handover frequency, causing adverse impact on TCP flow and congestion control operations. In this paper, we...
متن کاملImproving the Start-Up Behaviour of TCP-friendly Media Transmissions
The Internet has built its success story to a large degree on the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). Since TCP still represents the by far most important transport protocol in the current Internet traffic mix, new applications like media streaming need to take into account the social rules implied by TCP’s congestion control algorithms, i.e., they need to behave TCP-friendly. One problem of t...
