Haggling over substitutes

چکیده

Using a model of substitutable goods I determine generic conditions on tastes which guarantee that fixed prices are not optimal: the fully optimal tariff includes lotteries. That is, a profit maximising seller would employ a haggling strategy. We show that the fully optimal selling strategy in a class of cases requires a seller to not allow themselves to focus on one good but to remain haggling over more than one good. This throws new light on the selling strategies used in diverse industries. These insights are used to provide a counter-example to the no lotteries result of McAfee and McMillan (J. Econ. Theory 46 (1988) 335). r 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. JEL classification: L11; D42; C63

When and Why Does Haggling Occur? Some Suggestions from a Qualitative but Computational Simulation of Negotiation

We present a computational simulation which captures aspects of negotiation as the interaction of agents searching for an agreement over their own mental model. Specifically this simulation relates the beliefs of each agent about the action of cause and effect to the resulting negotiation dialogue. The model highlights the difference between negotiating to find any solution and negotiating to o...

Online Haggling at a Name-Your-Own-Price Retailer: Theory and Application

We present a formal model of haggling between a name-your-own-price retailer and a set of individual buyers. Rather than posting a price, the retailer waits for potential buyers to submit offers for a given product and then chooses to either accept or reject them. Consumers whose offers have been rejected can invest in additional haggling effort and increment their offers. The main advantage of...

Increasing Price Transparency: Implications of Consumer Price Posting for Consumers' Haggling Behavior and a Seller's Pricing Strategies

In an attempt to gain a better position in haggling, consumers often seek a seller's pricing information (e.g., whether the posted price is negotiable, the discount and transaction prices) before going to that seller. Although traditionally difficult to obtain, such information is becoming increasingly available due to consumer price posting (CPP), whereby consumers post and share their purchas...

Multiproduct Haggling

Firms show a great deal of ingenuity in targeting certain products at certain consumers. A multiproduct monopolist can screen consumers over quality (see Rochet and Choné (1998)). (1989), the work of Thanassoulis (2001) Chapter 2 and Bakos and Brynjolfsson (1999))....
