Inverse Problems as Statistics

چکیده
What mathematicians, scientists, engineers, and statisticians mean by \inverse problem" di ers. For a statistician, an inverse problem is an inference or estimation problem. The data are nite in number and contain errors, as they do in classical estimation or inference problems, and the unknown typically is in nite-dimensional, as it is in nonparametric regression. The additional complication in an inverse problem is that the data are only indirectly related to the unknown. Canonical abstract formulations of statistical estimation problems subsume this complication by allowing probability distributions to be indexed in more-or-less arbitrary ways by parameters, which can be in nite-dimensional. Standard statistical concepts, questions, and considerations such as bias, variance, mean-squared error, identi ability, consistency, e ciency, and various forms of optimality, apply to inverse problems. This article discusses inverse problems as statistical estimation and inference problems, and points to the literature for a variety of techniques and results.

A Computational Statistics Approach to Stochastic Inverse Problems and Uncertainty Quantification in Heat Transfer
As most engineering systems and processes operate in an uncertain environment, it becomes increasingly important to address their analysis and inverse design in a stochastic manner using statistical data-driven methods. Recent advances in computational Bayesian and spatial statistics enable complete and efficient solution procedures to such problems. Herein, a novel framework based on Bayesian ...
متن کاملSpatial statistics models for stochastic inverse problems in heat conduction
Uncertainties such as measurement noise are unavoidable in inverse problems and often lead to unstable solutions due to the ill-posed nature of such problems. However, there is a rich statistical information contained in the actual data that is often not used. In this paper, we explore the solution of stochastic inverse heat conduction problems where the unknowns (e.g. boundary heat flux or dis...
متن کاملInverse and Reverse 2-facility Location Problems with Equality Measures on a Network
In this paper we consider the inverse and reverse network facility location problems with considering the equity on servers. The inverse facility location with equality measure deals with modifying the weights of vertices with minimum cost, such that the difference between the maximum and minimum weights of clients allocated to the given facilities is minimized. On the other hand, the reverse c...
متن کاملNonparametric statistical inverse problems
We explain some basic theoretical issues regarding nonparametric statistics applied to inverse problems. Simple examples are used to present classical concepts such as the white noise model, risk estimation, minimax risk, model selection and optimal rates of convergence, as well as more recent concepts such as adaptive estimation, oracle inequalities, modern model selection methods, Stein’s unb...
متن کاملStrong convergence theorem for a class of multiple-sets split variational inequality problems in Hilbert spaces
In this paper, we introduce a new iterative algorithm for approximating a common solution of certain class of multiple-sets split variational inequality problems. The sequence of the proposed iterative algorithm is proved to converge strongly in Hilbert spaces. As application, we obtain some strong convergence results for some classes of multiple-sets split convex minimization problems.
متن کاملInverse statistical problems: from the inverse Ising problem to data science
Inverse problems in statistical physics are motivated by the challenges of ‘big data’ in different fields, in particular high-throughput experiments in biology. In inverse problems, the usual procedure of statistical physics needs to be reversed: Instead of calculating observables on the basis of model parameters, we seek to infer parameters of a model based on observations. In this review, we ...
