Experimental rheology of model colloidal dispersions

چکیده
Experimental rheological aspects of colloidal dispersions are now being investigated with improved skills and with better defined model systems. New methods allow more detailed investigations. The relationship between the rheological macroproperties, microproperties and processes is the focus of the most recent investigations. Better insight has been gained concerning this relationship. type of flow field is usually shear, because a well defined extensional flow for dispersions is still not an option.

The influence of weak attractive forces on the microstructure and rheology of colloidal dispersions
Rheology is demonstrated to be a sensitive and quantitative probe of weak attractive forces acting in concentrated stable colloidal dispersions through comparison of rheology and small-angle neutron scattering measurements on a model dispersion with added polyampholyte. Polyampholyte-stabilized dispersions are found to exhibit weak attractions in the form of depletion forces arising from free p...
متن کاملMicrostructure and Rheology Relationships for Shear Thickening Colloidal Dispersions
The non-Newtonian shear rheology of colloidal dispersions is the result of the competition and balance between hydrodynamic (dissipative) and thermodynamic (conservative) forces that lead to a nonequilibrium microstructure under flow. We present the first experimental measurements of the shear induced microstructure of a concentrated, near hard-sphere colloidal dispersion through the shear thic...
متن کاملElectrosteric Stabilization of Colloidal Dispersions
The electrosteric stabilization of model colloidal dispersions is quantified through high-frequency rheometry and complementary techniques. Model aqueous dispersions with a poly(butyl acrylate)polystyrene core and a layer of poly(methacrylic acid) grafted onto the surface are prepared and characterized. The influence of pH, electrolyte concentration, and amount of polymer in the stabilizing lay...
متن کاملColloidal Microdynamics: Pair-drag Simulations of Model-concentrated Aggregated Systems
We report results of simulations of a model for concentrated aggregated colloidal dispersions under shear flows. In an effort to study trends in rheology for varying colloidal interactions, we study a reduced hydrodynamic, frame-invariant, pair-drag model in which a long-range, many-body mobility matrix is generated just from resistance pair-drag terms that include lubrication. The model also i...
متن کاملBlock copolymer assembly to control fluid rheology
Recent experimental studies on the rheology of block copolymer micelles are reviewed. Where appropriate, we draw analogies between the viscoelastic properties of polymeric micelles and those of colloidal dispersions. We also present some important differences between these two classes of complex fluids, namely the ability to tune self-assembly through solvent polymer interactions. Finally, new ...
