The Ages of Very Cool Hydrogen–rich White Dwarfs

چکیده
The evolution of white dwarfs is essentially a cooling process that depends primarily on the energy stored in their degenerate cores and on the transparency of their envelopes. In this paper we compute accurate cooling sequences for carbon–oxygen white dwarfs with hydrogen dominated atmospheres for the full range of masses of interest. For this purpose we use the most accurate available physical inputs for both the equation of state and opacities of the envelope and for the thermodynamic quantities of the degenerate core. We also investigate the role of the latent heat in the computed cooling sequences. We present separately cooling sequences in which the effects of phase separation of the carbon–oxygen binary mixture upon crystallization have been neglected, and the delay introduced in the cooling times when this mechanism is properly taken into account, in order to compare our results with other published cooling sequences which do not include a treatment of this phenomenon. We find that the cooling ages of very cool white dwarfs with pure hydrogen atmospheres have been systematically underestimated by roughly 1.5 Gyr at log(L/L ) = −4.5 for an otherwise typical ∼ 0.6M white dwarf, when phase separation is neglected. If phase separation of the binary mixture is included then the cooling ages are further increased by roughly 10%. Cooling tracks and cooling isochrones in several color–magnitude diagrams are presented as well. Subject headings: stars: interiors — white dwarfs.

On the Dissociation Equilibrium of H2 in Very Cool, Helium-Rich White Dwarf Atmospheres
We investigate the dissociation equilibrium of H2 in very cool, helium-rich white dwarf atmospheres. We present the solution of the non-ideal chemical equilibrium for the dissociation of molecular hydrogen in a medium of dense helium. We find that at the photosphere of cool white dwarfs of Teff = 4000K, the non-ideality results in an increase of the mole fraction of molecular hydrogen by up to ...
متن کاملModel Atmosphere Analysis of Two Very Cool White Dwarfs
A detailed analysis of the very cool white dwarfs SDSS 1337+00 and LHS 3250 is presented. Model atmosphere calculations with improved collision-induced absorptions by molecular hydrogen indicate that a pure hydrogen composition can be ruled out, and that the strong infrared absorption observed in these cool stars is better explained in terms of collisions of H 2 with neutral helium. It is shown...
متن کاملPure Hydrogen Model Atmospheres for Very Cool White Dwarfs
Microlensing events observed in the line of sight toward the LMC indicate that a significant fraction of the mass of the dark halo of the Galaxy is probably composed of white dwarfs. In addition, white dwarf sequences have now be observed in the HR diagrams of several globular clusters. Because of the unavailability of white dwarf atmospheres for Teff < 4000K, cooling time scales for white dwar...
متن کاملFound : The missing blue opacity in atmosphere models of cool hydrogen white dwarfs
We investigate the importance of the far red wing of the Lyman α line of hydrogen in the atmospheres of cool white dwarfs of pure hydrogen composition. We find that this absorption process dominates all important sources of opacity in the blue part of the optical spectrum of these stars. Our successful fits to the spectra of cool DA/DC white dwarfs indicate that the far red wing of the Ly α lin...
متن کاملLTE or NLTE for the analysis of hot white dwarf and subdwarf B stars?
We evaluate the influence of NLTE effects on hydrogen and helium lines of high gravity stars. This investigation covers the classes of hydrogen-rich DA and DAO white dwarfs and helium-rich DO white dwarfs. Furthermore, model atmospheres of hydrogen-rich subdwarf B (sdB) stars are investigated. Implications for model atmosphere analyses of such stars are discussed. Pure hydrogen atmospheres of D...
