A major advantage of conceptual graphs is their ease of use particularly in the graphical form. The goals of the graphical interface subgroup is the creation of a document providing general guidelines for the implementation of such an interface and the creation of one (or more) implementations conforming to those guidelines. Furthermore, members of the group plan to make available a suit e of of portable universal interfaces for the representation and acquisition of conceptual graphs. There are a number of interfaces that can be considered within the boundaries of the GRIP's interests. The most obvious being a generalized interface that will arrange and display the core graph ADTs on a graphics view surface, and conversely translates graphs constructed with the interface into the core ADT structures. Such an interface should be customizable to user requirements, for example concept and relations of particular types may be given a speciic characteristic in terms of shape, color or shading. Such an interface needs to include simple editing facilities for text and graphical representations which allow consistency between the representations , i.e. changes to the graph knowledge base eeect changes to the graph-ical form and visa versa. In addition it needs to be exible enough to cover a wide range of applications from Knowledge and Expert System based applications tools, Database Query formation, Natural Language Understanding and Text Retrieval systems.
