The Maximum Sinkage of a Ship
نویسنده
چکیده
A ship moving steadily forward in shallow water of constant depth h is usually subject to downward forces and hence squat, which is a potentially dangerous sinkage or increase in draft. Sinkage increases with ship speed, until it reaches a maximum at just below the critical speed p gh. Here we use both a linear transcritical shallow-water equation and a fully dispersive nite-depth theory to discuss the ow near that critical speed and to compute the maximum sinkage, trim angle, and stern displacement for some example hulls.

Computational Towing Tank Procedures for Single Run Curves of Resistance and Propulsion
A procedure is proposed to perform ship hydrodynamics computations for a wide range of velocities in a single run, herein called the computational towing tank. The method is based on solving the fluid flow equations using an inertial earth-fixed reference frame, and ramping up the ship speed slowly such that the time derivatives become negligible and the local solution corresponds to a quasi st...
متن کاملA brief history of mathematical ship squat prediction , focussing on the contributions of E . O . Tuck
This article traces the contributions of Prof. E.O. Tuck to the field of mathematical ship squat prediction. The review expands on Tuck’s own review of his early work [1] and describes the use of his formulae in modern squat prediction methods. A method for calculating Tuck’s sinkage and trim coefficients using easilyobtainable ship parameters is also described.
متن کاملShip Squat in Non-Uniform Water Depth
The problem of predicting ship squat in non-uniform water depth is studied in this paper. For transverse depth variations, calculations are done using slender-body shallow-water theory, as implemented in the code “ShallowFlow”. Examples are given for realistic ships transiting dredged channels, and the effect of channel width on ship squat is discussed. Further examples are given for ships tran...
متن کاملShip Trim Optimization: Assessment of Influence of Trim on Resistance of MOERI Container Ship
Environmental issues and rising fuel prices necessitate better energy efficiency in all sectors. Shipping industry is a stakeholder in environmental issues. Shipping industry is responsible for approximately 3% of global CO₂ emissions, 14-15% of global NO(X) emissions, and 16% of global SO(X) emissions. Ship trim optimization has gained enormous momentum in recent years being an effective opera...
متن کاملPredicting Maximum Traction to Improve Maneuverability for Autonomous Mobile Robots on Rough Terrain
This paper proposes a method to predict maximum traction force for autonomous mobile robots on rough terrain in order to improve maneuverability. For predicting traction force, we utilize friction-slip curves based on modified Brixius model derived empirically in terramechanics, which is a function of mobility number Bn′ and slip ratio S. Friction-slip curves include physical characteristics of...
