چکیده

Rhodnius prolixus is a Hemiptera that feeds exclusively on vertebrate blood in all life stages. Its salivary glands produce potent pharmacological substances that counteract host hemostasis, including anti-clotting, anti-platelet, and vasodilatory substances. To obtain a further insight into the salivary biochemical and pharmacological complexity of this insect, a cDNA library was randomly sequenced, and salivary gland homogenates were fractionated by HPLC to obtain aminoterminal sequences of abundantly expressed proteins. Results indicate a remarkable expansion of the lipocalin family in Rhodnius salivary glands, among other protein sequences described. A summary of 31 new full length proteins deducted from their mRNA sequence is described, including several new members of the nitrophorin, triabin, and pallidipin families. The electronic version of the complete tables is available at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/vectors/rhodnius_prolixus.

Purification and characterization of prolixin S (nitrophorin 2), the salivary anticoagulant of the blood-sucking bug Rhodnius prolixus.

The salivary anticoagulant of the blood-sucking bug Rhodnius prolixus was purified to homogeneity using a protocol consisting of weak cation-exchange, DEAE, hydrophobic-interaction and octadecyl reverse-phase chromatography, yielding a protein with the same N-terminal sequence as nitrophorin 2, one of the four NO haem protein carriers present in the salivary glands of Rhodnius with a molecular ...

Excretion in the Blood-sucking Bug, Rhodnius Prolixus Stal. Ii. the Normal Course of Diuresis and the Effect of Temperature.

It has recently been shown that the diuresis of fed 5th-stage larvae of Rhodnius is brought about by a hormone that appears in the haemolymph (Maddrell, 1962, 1963). This diuretic hormone is released from the fused ganglionic mass in the mesothorax, probably from its posterior neurosecretory cells. This paper examines some of the features of this diuresis in the light of this discovery and incl...

Nitric oxide loading of the salivary nitric-oxide-carrying hemoproteins (nitrophorins) in the blood-sucking bug Rhodnius prolixus.

The salivary glands of the blood-sucking bug Rhodnius prolixus are formed by a single layer of binucleated epithelial cells surrounded by a double layer of transversely oriented smooth muscle cells. The epithelial cells are rich in rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria and have abundant microvillar projections towards the gland lumen. This cell layer surrounds a relatively large cavity w...

Lysophosphatidylcholine acts as an anti-hemostatic molecule in the saliva of the blood-sucking bug Rhodnius prolixus.

Blood-sucking arthropods possess a variety of anti-hemostatic factors in their salivary glands to maintain blood fluidity during feeding. In this work we demonstrate the anti-hemostatic properties of lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC) isolated from the salivary glands of Rhodnius prolixus. First, we examined salivary glands of fourth and fifth instar nymphs for their phospholipid composition. The...

Neurohormones implicated in the control of Malpighian tubule secretion in plant sucking heteropterans: The stink bugs Acrosternum hilare and Nezara viridula.

Plant sucking heteropteran bugs feed regularly on small amounts of K(+)-rich plant material, in contrast to their hematophagous relatives which imbibe large volumes of Na(+)-rich blood. It was anticipated that this would be reflected in the endocrine control of Malpighian tubule (MT) secretion. To explore this, neuroendocrine factors known to influence MT secretion were tested on MT of the pent...
