چکیده

A central question in the empirical sciences is; given a body of data how do we best attempt to make predictions? There are subtle differences between current approaches which include Minimum Message Length (MML) and Solomonoff’s theory of induction [24]. The nature of hypothesis spaces is explored and we observe a correlation between the complexity of a function and the frequency with which it is represented. There is not a single best hypothesis, as suggested by Occam’s razor (which says prefer the simplest), but a set of functionally equivalent hypotheses. One set of hypotheses is preferred over another set because it is larger, thus giving the impression simpler functions generalize better. The probabilistic weighting of one set of hypotheses is given by the relative size of its equivalence class. We justify Occam’s razor by a counting argument over the hypothesis space. Occam’s razor contrasts with the No Free Lunch theorems which state that it impossible for one machine learning algorithm to generalize better than any other. No Free Lunch theorems assume a distribution over functions, whereas Occam’s razor assumes a distribution over programs.

A Predictive Approach to the Analysis of Intonation in Discourse

This paper presents an approach to the analysis of prosody in French discourse, based on a prediction of the unmarked default intonation matching the lexical and syntactic properties of the sequence. By confronting this default intonation with the actual intonation used by the speaker, all marked intonation elements can be identified. The prediction of default intonation takes into account word...

Comparison of the Speech Syntactic Features between Hearing-Impaired and Normal Hearing Children

Introduction: The present study seeks to describe and analyze the syntactic features of children with severely hearing loss who had access to the hearing aids compared with children with normal hearing, assigning them to the same separate gender classes.   Materials and Methods: In the present study, eight children with severe hearing impairment who used a hearing aid and eight hearing children...

Syntactic Development of Right-Brain and Left-Brain Dominant Iranian EFL Learners: Processability Theory in Perspective

Processability Theory, a component of the cognitive approach to second language acquisition tries to enhance understanding of how the interlanguage knowledge systems can be restructured by second language learners (Pienemann, 1998, 2015). The present study intended to run a similar investigation into the syntactic development of Right-Brain and Left-Brain Dominant Iranian EFL learners based on ...

Evaluation of “Mosaic 1 Reading”: A Microstructural Approach to Textual Analysis of Pedagogical Materials

To analyze and evaluate textbooks, researchers have either proposed scales and checklists to be filled by teachers and learners or conducted qualitative investigations of the match between SLA theories and textbook activities. This study, however, employs the microstructural approach of schema theory to scrutinize the reading passages of “Mosaic 1 Reading”. To this end, 17 passages of the textb...

A Novel Approach to Conditional Random Field-based Named Entity Recognition using Persian Specific Features

Named Entity Recognition is an information extraction technique that identifies name entities in a text. Three popular methods have been conventionally used namely: rule-based, machine-learning-based and hybrid of them to extract named entities from a text. Machine-learning-based methods have good performance in the Persian language if they are trained with good features. To get good performanc...

Language dominance prediction in Spanish-English bilingual children using syntactic information: a first approximation

This paper presents results on a preliminary study using syntactic information to predict language dominance in Spanish-English bilingual children. Our approach uses a bag of syntactic grammar rules taken from narratives in English and Spanish. We then measure prediction accuracy of categorizing children into Spanish-dominant, English-dominant, and Balanced Bilingual. The results are competitiv...
