Uptake of radioactive phosphorus in experimental tumors. II. effect of vascularity on radioactive uptake in neoplastic, inflammatory, and normal ocular tissue.

چکیده
This second phase of the study of "Uptake of Radioactive Phosphorus in Experimental Tumors" deals with the uptake of P32 by malignant tissue, in comparison with that by inflammatory ocular tissue, and an investigation of the influence of vascularity upon the uptake of P32 in normal, inflammatory, and neoplastic tissues. There has been some speculation as to the effect of vascularity upon the uptake of P32by neoplastic as compared with normal tissue. Obviously, with greater vascular supply, the tissue is exposed to more radioactive material and also has a greater capillary area for diffusion of the phosphate ion across the membrane into the tissue itself. Either of these mechanisms may result in higher deposi tion. In curves of radioactive uptake, the initial rapid rise, or that occurring during the first 5 minutes of observation, is thought generally to be due to vascularity (3). Following the pattern set forth in our first paper on uptake of radioactive phosphorus in experimental tumors, the study of the influence of vascularity was approached in three sets of experiments: 1. Inflammatory corneal lesions were produced, and uptake studies were carried out over the lesions and simultaneously over normal ocular tissue, and the pattern of accumulation was plotted againsL the element of time. 2. Perfusion studies were carried out on eyes containing anterior chamber neoplasms. Com parative radioactive counts were made over both the neoplasm and the normal ocular tissue. 3. Comparative measurements of the uptake

taken up by neoplastic ocular tissue to a much greater extent than by the corresponding normal ocular tissue during a period extending from 10 minutes to several days following the intravenous injection of P32. It was postulated (6) that the increased radioactivity found in the tumor during the first 15 minutes was due to the high blood level of P32and the high vascularity of the tumor. However...
متن کاملUptake of radioactive phosphorus in experimental tumors. I. Comparison of radioactivity in neoplastic and normal ocular tissue.
For several years we have been pursuing clini cal investigations relating to uptake of radioactive phosphorus (P32) by neoplastia and inflammatory lesions within the eye, and to the development of criteria for diagnostic interpretation and evalua tion of differential radioactive counts in normal and diseased tissues. This method of diagnostic study of eye lesions was suggested by previous ex pe...
متن کاملPhosphorus Metabolism of Neoplastic Tissues (mammary Carcinoma, Lymphoma, Lymphosarcoma) as Indicated by Radioactive Phosphorus
In previous studies from these laboratories, radioactive phosphorus was used to determine the rate of phospholipid turnover in 4 types of transplantable tumors: a mammary carcinoma, a lymphoma, a lymphosarcoma, and sarcoma 180 (1, 2 ) . Some distinctive features of the metabolism of these neoplastic tissues were described: (a) the fact that their phospholipid turnover bears a greater resemblanc...
متن کاملExtremity Radioactive Iodine Uptake on Post-therapeutic Whole Body Scan in Patients with Differentiated Thyroid Cancer
Objective(s): We investigated a frequency of lower extremity uptake on the radioactive iodine (RAI) whole body scan (WBS) after RAI treatment in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer, in order to retrospectively examine whether or not the frequency was pathological. Methods: This retrospective study included 170 patients with thyroid cancer, undergoing RAI treatment. Overall, 99r (58%) an...
متن کاملThe distribution of administered radioactive rubidium (Rb86) in normal and neoplastic tissues of mice and humans.
Previous observations (2) have shown a rela tively small uptake of Rb86by normal brain tissue after parenteral administration of Rb86 carbonate in the guinea pig and dog. This potentially low background would be useful in localizing intracranial tumors with sufficient isotope avidity. This problem was investigated by determining the uptake and distribution of parenterally adminis tered Rb86in n...
