چکیده

A conformal dispersive finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is developed for the study of one-dimensional (1-D) plasmonic waveguides formed by an array of periodic infinite-long silver cylinders at optical frequencies. The curved surfaces of circular and elliptical inclusions are modelled in orthogonal FDTD grid using effective permittivities (EPs) and the material frequency dispersion is taken into account using an auxiliary differential equation (ADE) method. The proposed FDTD method does not introduce numerical instability but it requires a fourth-order discretisation procedure. To the authors' knowledge, it is the first time that the modelling of curved structures using a conformal scheme is combined with the dispersive FDTD method. The dispersion diagrams obtained using EPs and staircase approximations are compared with those from the frequency domain embedding method. It is shown that the dispersion diagram can be modified by adding additional elements or changing geometry of inclusions. Numerical simulations of plasmonic waveguides formed by seven elements show that row(s) of silver nanoscale cylinders can guide the propagation of light due to the coupling of surface plasmons.

Are negative index materials achievable with surface plasmon waveguides? A case study of three plasmonic geometries.

We present a theoretical analysis of planar plasmonic waveguides that support propagation of positive and negative index modes. Particular attention is given to the modes sustained by metal-insulator-metal (MIM), insulator-metal-insulator (IMI), and insulator-insulator-metal (IIM) geometries at visible and near-infrared frequencies. We find that all three plasmonic structures are characterized ...

Light propagation in curved silver nanowire plasmonic waveguides.

Plasmonic waveguides made of metal nanowires (NWs) possess significant potential for applications in integrated photonic and electronic devices. Energy loss induced by bending of a NW during light propagation is critical in affecting its performance as a plasmonic waveguide. We report the characterization of the pure bending loss in curved crystalline silver NW plasmonic waveguides by decouplin...

Finite-Difference Frequency-Domain Method Analysis of Periodic Nano-Plasmonic Waveguides

Recently, guiding electromagnetic (EM) waves with a mode at subwavelength scale has attracted great attention, in particular, at optical wavelengths. The related phenomenon is that of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that are bound non-radiative surface waves propagating at metaldielectric interfaces with the fields decaying exponentially away from the interface [1]. Structures supporting such...

Gallium plasmonics: deep subwavelength spectroscopic imaging of single and interacting gallium nanoparticles.

Gallium has recently been demonstrated as a phase-change plasmonic material offering UV tunability, facile synthesis, and a remarkable stability due to its thin, self-terminating native oxide. However, the dense irregular nanoparticle (NP) ensembles fabricated by molecular-beam epitaxy make optical measurements of individual particles challenging. Here we employ hyperspectral cathodoluminescenc...
