Spatial Variation of the X - ray spectrum of the Crab Nebula

چکیده
We present spectral analysis of the Crab Nebula obtained with the Chandra X-ray observatory. The X-ray spectrum is characterized by a power-law whose index varies across the nebula. The variation can be discussed in terms of the particle injection from the pulsar in two different directions: the equatorial plane containing the torus and the symmetry axis along the jet. In the equatorial plane, spectra within the torus are the hardest, with photon index α ≈ 1.9, and are almost independent of the surface brightness. At the periphery of the torus,

Discovery of Spatial and Spectral Structure in the X-Ray Emission from the Crab Nebula.
The Chandra X-Ray Observatory observed the Crab Nebula and pulsar during orbital calibration. Zeroth-order images with the High-Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) readout by the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer spectroscopy array (ACIS-S) show a striking richness of X-ray structure at a resolution comparable to that of the best ground-based visible-light observations. The HETG-ACIS-S images re...
متن کاملA model for the spatial distribution of relativistic electrons in the Crab Nebula
We extend the homogeneous model for the synchrotron emission from plerions to allow more realistic predictions of the surface brightness profiles of the Crab Nebula at radio, optical and X-ray frequencies. Abandoning the assumption of a uniform particle distribution, we assume that particles are injected into the synchrotron nebula only in the vicinity of the pulsar. Their distribution is then ...
متن کاملSpectrum of Tev Gamma Rays from the Crab Nebula
The Crab Nebula has become established as the standard candle for TeV gamma-ray astronomy using the atmospheric Cherenkov technique. No evidence for variability has been seen. The spectrum of gamma rays from the Crab Nebula has been measured in the energy range 500 GeV to 8 TeV at the Whipple Observatory by the atmospheric Cherenkov imaging technique. Two methods of analysis involving independe...
متن کاملProperties of the Non-Thermal Emission in Plerions
The synchrotron emission observed in plerions depends on the characteristics of the magnetic fields and relativistic electrons in these supernova remnants. Therefore an analysis of the spectral and spatial properties of this emission, combined with models for the evolution and structure of plerions, would allow one to investigate the evolution of the synchrotron nebula, the structure of the mag...
متن کامل3 Chandra Phase - Resolved X - ray Spectroscopy of the Crab Pulsar
We present the first phase-resolved study of the X-ray spectral properties of the Crab Pulsar that covers all pulse phases. The superb angular resolution of the Chandra X-ray Observatory enables distinguishing the pulsar from the surrounding nebulosity, even at pulse minimum. Analysis of the pulse-averaged spectrum measures interstellar X-ray extinction due primarily to photoelectric absorption...
