چکیده

THE EFFECT OF COGNITIVE LOAD ON LIARS AND TRUTH TELLERS: EXPLORING THE MODERATING IMPACT OF WORKING MEMORY CAPACITY by Sarah Jordan Adviser: Maria Hartwig Two studies are presented. The purpose of the first study is to examine the moderating impact of working memory capacity (WMC) on the cognitive load produced by both the type of statement a person is making and the manner in which the person is interviewed in a mock crime scenario. The moderating impact of suspects’ WMC (measured using the automated operation span task) on this process was also assessed. Suspects were instructed to tell the truth, a relatively easy lie, or a more difficult lie. Suspects were then interviewed in a relatively easy manner, a moderately more difficult manner, or a very difficult manner. The purpose of the second study is to examine how the factors of the first study affected observers’ judgments of the suspects. Observers were asked to either directly assess the veracity of the suspects, or indirectly assess it by observing the suspects’ experienced cognitive load. The results overall did not support the hypotheses and demonstrated that deception was not cognitively more difficult from telling the truth and that the use of cognitive load was not helpful in the process of accurately determining the guilt or innocence of the suspects.

T-Pattern Analysis and Cognitive Load Manipulation to Detect Low-Stake Lies: An Exploratory Study

Deception has evolved to become a fundamental aspect of human interaction. Despite the prolonged efforts in many disciplines, there has been no definite finding of a univocally "deceptive" signal. This work proposes an approach to deception detection combining cognitive load manipulation and T-pattern methodology with the objective of: (a) testing the efficacy of dual task-procedure in enhancin...

Imposing Cognitive Load to Unmask Prepared Lies: A Recurrent Temporal Pattern Detection Approach

According to Vrij, the differences between liars and truth tellers are greater when interviewees report their stories in reverse order than in chronological order. We intend to explore such influences on the organization of behavior within the framework of the T-pattern model. This model grants the possibility to measure and compare behavior patterns between liars and truth tellers, not easily ...

Strategic Interviewing to Detect Deception: Cues to Deception across Repeated Interviews

Previous deception research on repeated interviews found that liars are not less consistent than truth tellers, presumably because liars use a "repeat strategy" to be consistent across interviews. The goal of this study was to design an interview procedure to overcome this strategy. Innocent participants (truth tellers) and guilty participants (liars) had to convince an interviewer that they ha...

Getting into the Minds of Pairs of Liars and Truth Tellers: An Examination of Their Strategies

We examined the strategies used by 20 pairs of liars and 20 pairs of truth tellers when they were given the opportunity to prepare themselves for an interview in which they would be questioned about their whereabouts during a given period of time. More lying than truth telling pairs prepared themselves for the interviews. The truth tellers and liars who did prepare themselves used different ver...

A reverse order interview does not aid deception detection regarding intentions

Promising recent research suggests that more cognitively demanding interviews improve deception detection accuracy. Would these cognitively demanding techniques work in the same way when discriminating between true and false future intentions? In Experiment 1 participants planned to complete a task, but instead were intercepted and interviewed about their intentions. Participants lied or told t...
