چکیده

Studies to determine the effects of gamma-radiation on sex pheromone production in female Tenebtio molitor showed that irradiation of females either as newly emerged or as pharate adults with 3.5 or 7 krad had no significant effect on their sex pheromone activity when compared to that of normals. However, treatment of irradiated insects with a juvenile hormone analogue increased their pheromone activity, whereas it decreased the pheromone activity in the normals. Ovary maturation was inhibited in irradiated insects, and it could not be alleviated by treatment with juvenile hormone analogue. Since ovarian transplants from normal to irradiated insects showed yolk deposition, whereas reciprocal transplants did not, it is concluded that the inhibition in yolk deposition in the ovaries of irradiated insects was due to radiation damage to the ovary itself rather than to the neuroendocrine system. Irradiation of the males with 7 krad did not affect their ability to respond to the female sex pheromone or their sexual vigour. At higher doses their response was slow and it decreased with increase in radiation dose, and also as a function of time after irradiation.

Sex Pheromone of the Mealworm Beetle

Sex pheromone activity from female medwonn beetles (Tenebrio molitor) may be extracted and quantified by fractional population response of virgin adult males, which attempt copulation with any pheromone-treated object. Extracts of mature males can be shown to elicit identical behavioral activity, although at lower individual concentration. Since response to the pheromone is sex-specific, its ap...

Inbreeding affects sexual signalling in males but not females of Tenebrio molitor.

In many species of animals, individuals advertise their quality with sexual signals to obtain mates. Chemical signals such as volatile pheromones are species specific, and their primary purpose is to influence mate choice by carrying information about the phenotypic and genetic quality of the sender. The deleterious effects of consanguineous mating on individual quality are generally known, whe...

Modulation of sexual signalling by immune challenged male mealworm beetles (Tenebrio molitor, L.): evidence for terminal investment and dishonesty.

Organisms partition resources into life-history traits in order to maximise fitness over their expected lifespan. For the males of many species fitness is determined by qualitative and quantitative aspects of costly sexual signals: The notion that epigamic traits are costly forms the cornerstone of those theories that propose parasites drive sexual selection. Consequently studies examining this...

Effects of host nutrition on virulence and fitness of entomopathogenic nematodes: Lipid- and protein-based supplements in Tenebrio molitor diets.

Entomopathogenic nematodes, Heterorhabditis indica and Steinernema riobrave, were tested for virulence and reproductive yield in Tenebrio molitor that were fed wheat bran diets with varying lipid- and protein-based supplements. Lipid supplements were based on 20% canola oil, peanut, pork or salmon, or a low lipid control (5% canola). Protein treatments consisted of basic supplement ingredients ...

Condition dependence of pheromones and immune function in the grain beetle Tenebrio molitor

1. Pheromones are chemical signals that function not only as mate attractors, but may also relay important information to prospective mates. In order for the information to be reliable, the signal must be costly to produce and this is likely to result in condition dependent expression of the signal. 2. We present results from two experiments on the grain beetle Tenebrio molitor examining phenot...
