Due to the harsh surroundings, WSNs may suffer from a large scale damage that causes many nodes to fail simultaneously and the network to get partitioned into multiple disjoint segments. In such a case, restoring the network connectivity is very important in order to avoid negative effects on the applications. In this paper, we pursue the placement of the least number of relay nodes to re-establish a strongly connected network topology. The problem of finding the minimum count and the position of relay nodes is NP-hard and hence we pursue heuristics. We present a novel three-step algorithm called FeSTA which is based on steinerizing appropriate triangles. Each segment is represented by a terminal. Each subset of 3 terminals forms a triangle. Finding the optimal solution for a triangle (i.e. connecting 3 segments) is a relatively easier problem. In the first step, FeSTA finds the best triangles and form islands of segments by establishing intra-triangle connectivity. Then in the second, disjoint islands of segment are federated. In the final step, the steinerized edges are optimized. The performance of FeSTA is validated through simulation. 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Quasi Random Deployment Strategy for Reliable Communication Backbones in Wireless Sensor Networks
Topology construction and topology maintenance are significant sub-problems of topology control. Spanning tree based algorithms for topology control are basically transmission range based type construction algorithms. The construction of an effective backbone, however, is indirectly related to the placement of nodes. Also, the dependence of network reliability on the communication path undertak...
متن کاملRelay node placement to heal partitioned wireless sensor networks
The wireless sensor networks deployed in hostile environments suffer from a high rate of node failures. Such failures may convert a fully-connected sensor network into multiple disjoint sub-networks, leading to the network partition problem. The placement of relay nodes is the only way to restore the lost connectivity because these devices, compared to the sensor nodes, have a higher energy bac...
متن کاملRelay sensor placement in wireless sensor networks
This paper addresses the following relay sensor placement problem: given the set of duty sensors in the plane and the upper bound of the transmission range, compute the minimum number of relay sensors such that the induced topology by all sensors is globally connected. This problem is motivated by practically considering the tradeoff among performance, lifetime, and cost when designing sensor n...
متن کاملRelay augmentation for lifetime extension of wireless sensor networks
We propose a novel relay augmentation strategy for extending the lifetime of a certain class of wireless sensor networks. In this class sensors are located at fixed and pre-determined positions and all communication takes place via multi-hop paths in a fixed routing tree rooted at the base station. It is assumed that no accumulation of data takes place along the communication paths and that the...
متن کاملPartial Fault-Tolerant Relay Node Placement in Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks
Existing work on placing additional relay nodes in wireless sensor networks to improve network connectivity typically assumes homogeneous wireless sensor nodes with an identical transmission radius. In compare, this paper addresses the problem of deploying relay nodes to provide fault tolerance with higher network connectivity in heterogeneous wireless sensor networks, where sensor nodes have d...
