چکیده

We present the results of detailed studies of the astrophysical conditions in z ∼ 3 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs), placing particular emphasis on what is learned from LBG rest frame UV spectra. By drawing from our database of ∼ 1000 spectra, and constructing higher S/N composite spectra from galaxies grouped according to properties such as luminosity, extinction, morphology, and environment, we can show how the rest-frame UV spectroscopic properties systematically depend on other galaxy properties. Such information is crucial to understanding the detailed nature of LBGs, and their impact on the surrounding IGM.

Color–selected High Redshift Galaxies and the Hdf

The quality, depth, and multi–color nature of the Hubble Deep Field images makes them an excellent resource for studying galaxies at z > 2 using selection techniques based on the presence of the 912Å Lyman break. I present a descriptive review of this method and of the properties of the objects which it identifies, and summarize spectroscopic progress on galaxies with 2 < z < 4 in the HDF. Usin...

Rest-frame Ultraviolet Spectra of Z ∼ 3 Lyman Break Galaxies

We present the results of a systematic study of the rest-frame UV spectroscopic properties of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). The database of almost 1000 LBG spectra proves useful for constructing high S/N composite spectra. The composite spectrum of the entire sample reveals a wealth of features attributable to hot stars, H II regions, dust, and outflowing neutral and ionized gas. By grouping the...

A search for the submillimetre counterparts to Lyman break galaxies

We have carried out targetted sub-mm observations as part of a programme to explore the connection between the rest-frame UV and far-IR properties of star-forming galaxies at high redshift, which is currently poorly understood. On the one hand the Lyman break technique is very effective at selecting z ∼ 3 galaxies. On the other hand ‘blank field’ imaging in the sub-mm seems to turn up sources r...

The infrared emission of ultraviolet selected galaxies from z = 0 to z = 1

Aims. We want to study the IR (> 8 μm) emission of samples of galaxies selected in their rest-frame UV in a very homogeneous way (wavelength and luminosity) from z = 0 to z = 1: comparing their UV and IR rest-frame emissions will allow us to study the evolution of dust attenuation with z as well as to check if a UV selection is able to track all the star formation. This UV selection will also b...

The first galaxies: structure and stellar populations

The Hubble Deep Fields continue to be a valuable resource for studying the distant universe, particularly at z > 2 where their comoving volume becomes large enough to encompass several hundred L∗ galaxies or their progenitors. Here I present recent results from a near–infrared imaging survey of the HDF–North with NICMOS, which provides structural and photometric information in the optical rest ...
