چکیده

The causes of thrombocytopenia in the newborn and young infant differ from those of older children and adults. Maternal antibodies, platelet sequestration during haemolytic disease of the newborn, and thrombocytopenia following replacement transfusion with stored blood, bacterial septicaemia, and spirochaetal and protozoal infections are important causes of neonatal thrombocytopenic purpura. It may be a feature of the congenital aplastic anaemia associated with certain anomalies of bone, while in a proportion of cases the aetiology remains obscure. Syphilis as a cause of neonatal thrombocytopenia has not been emphasized and is either not mentioned in standard works of haematology (Britton, 1963; Wintrobe, 1961) or is cited as a rare association (Mandel, 1962). Our interest in the problem was first aroused by 2 cases of congenital syphilis associated with bleeding, thrombocytopenia, and anaemia. Although congenital syphilis is seen fairly frequently at Baragwanath Hospital, it was our impression that thrombocytopenia was rarely associated with this disease. A study was undertaken to assess the incidence of thrombocytopenia in syphilis, and to clarify the importance of syphilis as a cause of bleeding in newborn and young infants.

Diagnosis of congenital syphilis.

The diagnosis of congenital syphilis in apparently healthy infants continues to be problematic. Immunoglobulin M antibodies specific for a subset of Treponema pallidum antigens have been detected by Western blotting (immunoblotting). In the present study we investigated the sensitivity and specificity of this method. We tested 26 infants aged 0 to 4 months who fulfilled the accepted criteria fo...

Syphilitic disease of the long bones in the Bantu.

Although syphilitic lesions in bone have become increasingly rare in European communities, syphilis is still a common cause of bone pathology in the South African Bantu. Syphilis entirely accounts for, or complicates, 90 per cent of all bone lesions-apart from fractures-seen in the Baragwanath Hospital. Syphilis is notorious for the diverse ways in which it may present itself, and an attempt is...

Infectious disease among enslaved African Americans at Eaton's Estate, Warren County, North Carolina, ca. 1830-1850.

The skeletal remains of 17 people buried in the Eaton Ferry Cemetery in northern North Carolina provide a means of examining health and infectious disease experience in the XIX century South. The cemetery appears to contain the remains of African Americans enslaved on the Eaton family estate from approximately 1830-1850, and thus offers a window into the biological impacts of North American sla...

Syphilis in London circa 2004: new challenges from an old disease.

I n recent decades, cases of newly diagnosed syphilis were rare in the United Kingdom.
