Recirculating Aquaculture Tank Production Systems: Integrating Fish and Plant Culture
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recirculating aquaculture systems are designed to raise large quantities of fish in relatively small volumes of water by treating the water to remove toxic waste products and then reusing it. In the process of reusing the water many times, non-toxic nutrients and organic matter accumulate. These metabolic byproducts need not be wasted if they are channeled into secondary crops that have economic value or in some way benefit the primary production system. Systems that grow additional crops by utilizing by-products from the production of the primary species are referred to as integrated systems.

Aquaponics: integrating fish feeding rates and ion waste production for strawberry hydroponics
Aquaponics is the science of integrating intensive fish aquaculture with plant production in recirculating water systems. Although ion waste production by f ish cannot satisfy all plant requirements, less is known about the relationship between total feed provided for f ish and the production of milliequivalents (mEq) of different macronutrients for plants, especially for nutrient flow hydropon...

HORTSCIENCE, VOL. 35(6), OCTOBER 2000 Consumer demand for fish has been increasing despite declining ocean fish catches. Aquaculture, the cultivation of freshwater and marine plants and animals, is one of the fastest growing segments of U.S. agriculture. In the period from 1987 to 1992, sales of farm-raised trout increased by almost 20% to over $80 million in the United States (Terlizzi et al.,...

The study designed and constructed a prototype recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) which was used to examine the liver and kidney histology of hybrid catfish (Heterobranchus bidorsalis (♂) X Clarias gariepinus (♀)) fed six practical diets after 12 weeks. Fingerlings of the test fish, mean weight and length of 1.01±0.02g and 4.63±0.34cm were used for the study. In the formulated diets fishmea...
