Temporal Rate Limiting: cloud elasticity at a fiat fee

چکیده
In the current usage-based pricing scheme offered by most cloud computing providers, customers are charged based on the capacity and the lease time of the resources they capture (bandwidth, number of virtual machines, lOPS rate, etc.). Taking advantage of this pricing scheme, customers can implement auto-scaling purchase policies by leasing (e.g., hourly) necessary amounts of resources to satisfy a desired QoS threshold under their current demand. Auto-scaling yields strict QoS and variable charges. Some customers, however, would be willing to settle for a more relaxed statistical QoS in exchange for a predictable fiat charge. In this work we propose Temporal Rate Limiting (TRL), a purchase policy that permits a customer to allocate optimally a specified purchase budget over a predefined period of time. TRL offers the same expected QoS with auto-scaling but at a lower, flat charge. It also outperforms in terms of QoS a naive flat charge policy that splits the available budget uniformly in time. We quantify the benefits of TRL analytically and also deploy TRL on Amazon Ee2 and perform a live validation in the context of a "blacklisting" application for Twitter.

Providing Geo-Elasticity in Geographically Distributed Clouds
Geographically distributed cloud platforms are well suited for serving a geographically diverse user base. However traditional cloud provisioning mechanisms that make local scaling decisions are not adequate for delivering best possible performance for modern web applications that observe both temporal and spatial workload fluctuations. In this paper, we propose GeoScale, a system that provides...
متن کاملIntermediated Surge Pricing
I study a market in which a profit-maximizing intermediary facilitates trade between buyers and sellers. The intermediary sets prices for buyers and sellers, and keeps the difference as her fee. Optimal prices increase when demand increases, i.e., shifts right. If a demand increase is due to an increase in the number of ex ante similar buyers, then the intermediary’s optimal percent fee decreas...
متن کاملNonlinear pricing of e-market transaction services
A key element of the business structure for electronic markets is the design of price schedules for transaction services. Stock exchanges and transaction service providers around the world regard transaction fees not only as a major source of income but also as an incentive mechanism for investors. In this paper, we discuss the principles of nonlinear transaction fee schedules and present the r...
متن کاملAtomistically informed dislocation dynamics in fee crystals
We develop a nodal dislocation dynamics (DD) model to simulate plastic processes in fee crystals. The model explicitly accounts for all slip systems and Burgers vectors observed in fee systems, including stacking faults and partial dislocations. We derive simple conservation rules that describe all partial dislocation interactions rigorously and allow us to model and quantify cross-slip process...
متن کاملThe Enrollment Effect of Secondary School Fees in Post-War Germany
This study utilizes a natural experiment in the fee abolition for West German secondary schools to identify its effect on enrollment and to obtain an estimate of the price elasticity of demand for education. The analysis is based on administrative school enrollment statistics as well as on representative individual-level data from three annual surveys of the German Mikrozensus. Estimates sugges...
