چکیده

Finding the global optimum can be challenging. The value located by a deterministic algorithm, such as Newton's method, will depend on the starting point used. Some starting points will lead to the global optimum while others will lead to a local optima. If there are a large number of local optima, nding the global optimum, in the absence of any other information, will largely be a matter of luck. Random search strategies are discussed in Sec. 2. A particular type of e cient random search, simulated annealing, is discussed in Sec. 3. A second type of e cient random search, genetic algorithms, is discussed in Sec. 4. Sec 5 considers evolutionary strategies, yet another search method and Sec 5.1 discusses a random search method combined with a deterministic search method. A list of the sources of the software used in this paper is given in Sec. 6. These algorithms are applied to di cult problems in Secs 789. Conclusions are presented in Sec. 10.

Maximal elements of sub-topical functions with applications to global optimization

We study the support sets of sub-topical functions‎ ‎and investigate their maximal elements in order to establish a necessary and sufficient condition‎ ‎for the global minimum of the difference of two sub-topical functions‎.

Spatial Econometrics using MATLAB

Toolboxes are the name given by the MathWorks to related sets of MATLAB functions aimed at solving a particular class of problems. Toolboxes of functions useful in signal processing, optimization, statistics, finance and a host of other areas are available from the MathWorks as add-ons to the standard MATLAB software distribution. I use the term Spatial Econometrics Toolbox to refer to my publi...

Using global constraints for local search

Conventional ways of using local search are di cult to generalize Increased e ciency is the only goal generality often being disregarded This is manifested in the highly monolithic encodings of complex problems and the application of highly speci c satisfaction methods Other approaches take the general constraint programming framework as a starting point and try to introduce local search method...

Characterizing Global Minimizers of the Difference of Two Positive Valued Affine Increasing and Co-radiant Functions

‎Many optimization problems can be reduced to a problem with an increasing and co-radiant objective function by a suitable transformation of variables. Functions, which are increasing and co-radiant, have found many applications in microeconomic analysis. In this paper, the abstract convexity of positive valued affine increasing and co-radiant (ICR) functions are discussed. Moreover, the ...

Parameter estimation of nonlinear econometric models using particle swarm optimization

Global optimization is an essential component of econometric modeling. Optimization in econometrics is often difficult due to irregular cost functions characterized by multiple local optima. The goal of this paper is to apply a relatively new stochastic global technique, particle swarm optimization, to the well-known but difficult disequilibrium problem. Because of its co-operative nature and b...
