Syphilitic immunofluorescence in experimental relapsing fever.

چکیده
Immunological cross-reactivity has been shown between related genera of the family Treponemataceae. Extracts of Borrelia cross-react with antibodies in syphilitic serum (Saurino and De Lamater, 1952) and produce positive skin tests in the later stages of syphilis (Ranque, Quilici, and Assadourian, 1967). The fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test (FTA-ABS) is at present considered to be specific, as its name implies, for treponemal disease. However, we have found that Borrelia infection in mice also induces an antibody that reacts in the FTA-ABS test, which would suggest that Treponema and Borrelia share a common antigen.

A Disconnect between the Neurospirochetoses in Humans and Rodent Models of Disease
The human spirochetal diseases share many clinical similarities despite their diverse epidemiology. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection, whereas the leptospiroses and the borrelioses are zoonoses. The clinical similarities among the spirochetoses include a relapsing-remitting course of infection. The recurrent pattern of illness has three invariant features that are shared by all human...

Tick-borne relapsing fever is an endemic disease in some parts of Iran. Borellia persica, the most common cause of this disease in Iran, has a wide geographic distribution and is present in Alborz and Zagros mountain chains. Here we report a 16–year-old male patient who presented with two episodes of fever within 15 days. He had a history of few overnight stays in a cave of mountainous area in F...

Spirochetemia of syphilitic patients was demonstrated by Uhlenhuth and Mulzer (1913). Since transfusion syphilis was first reported by Fordyce (1915) and impor tance of its prevention repeatedly emphasized by Levy and Ginsburg (1927), Feldman (1928), McCluskie (1939), and others, a number of experimental and clinical studies have been made. متن کاملShort report: Diagnosis of tick-borne relapsing fever by the quantitative buffy coat fluorescence method.
The quantitative buffy coat (QBC) parasite detection method is a sensitive and specific tool for the diagnosis of malaria parasites. It is also useful for the diagnoses of other hemoparasites, including Trypanosoma, Babesia, and Leptospira. We report a case of relapsing fever diagnosed by this technique in a short-term traveler from Senegal. The diagnosis was confirmed by the standard Giemsa he...
