A pressure-induced strength transition in water-saturated geologic materials

چکیده

Porous, water-saturated geologic materials exposed to shock wave loading should undergo a gradual transition from a Terzaghi solid to a much stronger and stiffer material as the confining pressure increases over the range of about 0.2 GPa to about 2 GPa. This transition can thus be expected to become important in cases such as high explosive or nuclear cratering events in which ground shocks in excess of 1 GPa are produced.

Soil-Interaction of Intake Pressure Tunnels under Ground Strength Reduction Conditions due to Cracking of the Lining (Case study: Dasht-e-Abbas intake pressure tunnel)

The induced cracks on the concrete lining of the intake pressure tunnels may cause the water seep into the surrounding media leading to develop a hydro pressure on the external surface of the lining. In the common design practice, the lining can be designed to tolerate with this pressure using the Schleiss method. However, when the tunnel is constructed above the underground water, the seepage ...

Water-induced granular decomposition and its effects on geotechnical properties of crushed soft rocks

The widespread availability of soft rocks and their increasing use as cheap rockfill material is adding more to geotechnical hazards because time-dependent granular decomposition causes significant damage to their mechanical properties. An experimental study was conducted through monotonic torsional shear tests on crushed soft rocks under fully saturated and dry conditions and compared with ana...

Influence of waste tire chips on steady state behavior of sand

Materials such as waste tire chips were widely used to improve the strength of soil. The objective of this study is to discuss the residual strength or steady-state behavior of sand-waste tire chip mixtures. A series of undrained monotonic triaxial compression tests were conducted on reconstituted saturated specimens of sand and sand-tire chip mixtures with variation in the tire-chip contents f...

The Stability Assessment of Dasht-e-Abbas Pressure Intake Tunnel Subjected to Ground Strength Reduction-Iran

The hydraulic pressure is one of the most important factors in the design of pressure intake tunnels. Since the surrounding media cannot usually resist the high internal pressure of these tunnels, they are usually finished with an adequate lining mostly of reinforced concrete, which is an interaction problem between water, soil or rock and concrete lining. Although reinforcing the concrete lini...

Study of effect of paste volume, water to cementitious materials and fiber dosages on rheological properties and in-situ strength of self-compacting concrete

As a vibration- free concrete, self- compacting concrete (SCC) can be easily used in the absence of consolidation, therefore; it is a good option for repairing and retrofitting concrete structures. The quality of repair layer is highly effective on a successful repair. Accordingly, in this study, factors affecting the quality of fiber-reinforced self-compacting concrete repair layer, including ...
