Security Issues in FIPA Agents

چکیده

FIPA is one of the main standards available within the software agent domain today. Software agents are based on the distributed intelligent agent domain, and are a multi-agent system. FIPA operates in an open environment that opens up for security issues, such as the problem of authentication of agents, securing communication, and preventing unauthorised activity from hackers or malevolent agents. There are several freely available FIPA agent platforms developed through the EU ACTS and IST program available. So fare the main focus within the FIPA agent system domain has been on developing and testing, and little effort has been devoted to looking into the security issues. Security consists of maintaining confidentiality, integrity and availability of software, hardware and data. FIPA can be categorised as a software component consisting of code, which can be defined as data. FIPA agent systems can therefore be categorized as security critical systems vulnerable for security attacks such as eavesdropping, tampering, and denial of service attacks. This article will focus on security issues in FIPA agent systems by describing security and software agents in general before discussing and highlighting some of the unsolved security issues in FIPA agent systems.

Towards improved trust and security in FIPA agent platforms

FIPA (Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents) specifications are being proposed as the open standards for heterogeneous agency interaction. We examine the notions of trust and security inherent in the core or normative FIPA specifications and in the existing preliminary security specifications. We highlight its strengths and weaknesses and discuss the steps needed to improve security in the...

Considerations on Secure Fipa Compliant Agent Architecture

In the paper proposed secure architecture is FIPA compliant in the sense that every common FIPA compliant agent should be able to interact with agents having this extended architecture even not knowing the security mechanisms. On the other hand, agents demanding for security can, of course, refuse plain, non secured communication with non authenticated agents, etc. The security mechanisms can u...

Specifying Standard Security Mechanisms in Multi-agent Systems

Distributed multi-agent systems propose new infrastructure solutions to support the interoperability of electronic services. Security is a central issue for such infrastructures and is compounded by their intrinsic openness, heterogeneity and because of the autonomous and potentially self-interested nature of the agents therein. This article reviews the work that the FIPA agent standards body h...

Securing FIPA Agent Communication

The agent paradigm has been the subject of much research during the last decade. Recently, security of multiagent systems has gained increased attention. In this paper we consider the FIPA agent communication specifications from a security perspective, and outline how security functionality can be added. Keywords— security, multi-agent system, communication, FIPA.
