Climacteric vs Non-climacteric

چکیده
Fruits can be divided into two groups according to the regulatory mechanisms underlying their ripening process. Climacteric fruit, such as tomato, apple, pear, and melon are characterized by a ripening-associated increase in respiration and in ethylene production, the phytohormone ethylene being the major trigger and coordinator of the ripening process. By contrast, nonclimacteric fruits, such as grape, orange and pineapple, are characterized by the lack of ethylene-associated respiratory peak and the signaling pathways that drive the ripening process remain elusive. The identification of regulatory or structural genes controlling fruit development and ripening is a necessary step towards enlarging our understanding of the fruit biology and hence opening new leads for improving fruit quality traits.

Non-climacteric ripening and sorbitol homeostasis in plum fruits.
During ripening fruits undergo several physiological and biochemical modifications that influence quality-related properties, such as texture, color, aroma and taste. We studied the differences in ethylene and sugar metabolism between two genetically related Japanese plum cultivars with contrasting ripening behaviors. 'Santa Rosa' (SR) behaved as a typical climacteric fruit, while the bud sport...
متن کاملDiscovery of non-climacteric and suppressed climacteric bud sport mutations originating from a climacteric Japanese plum cultivar (Prunus salicina Lindl.)
Japanese plums are classified as climacteric; however, some economically important cultivars selected in California produce very little ethylene and require long ripening both "on" and "off" the tree to reach eating-ripe firmness. To unravel the ripening behavior of different Japanese plum cultivars, ripening was examined in the absence (air) or in the presence of ethylene or propylene (an ethy...
متن کاملClimacteric fruit ripening: Ethylene-dependent and independent regulation of ripening pathways in melon fruit
Cantaloupe melons have a typical climacteric behaviour with ethylene playing a major role in the regulation of the ripening process and affecting the ripening rate. Crossing of Cantaloupe Charentais melon with a non-climacteric melon indicated that the climacteric character is genetically dominant and conferred by two duplicated loci only. However, other experiments made by crossing two non-cli...
متن کاملA SEPALLATA gene is involved in the development and ripening of strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa Duch.) fruit, a non-climacteric tissue*
Climacteric and non-climacteric fruits have traditionally been viewed as representing two distinct programmes of ripening associated with differential respiration and ethylene hormone effects. In climacteric fruits, such as tomato and banana, the ripening process is marked by increased respiration and is induced and co-ordinated by ethylene, while in non-climacteric fruits, such as strawberry a...

Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) from the Caryophyllaceae family is a perennial shrub that is grown commercially for two years. This cut flower is non-climacteric and sensitive to vascular blockage. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of geranium, eucalyptus and myrtle essential oils on postharvest life of carnation flower in a completely randomized design with 10 treatments ...
