چکیده

This study examines the influence of lexical tone on voice onset time (VOT) in Mandarin and Hakka spoken in Taiwan. The examination of VOT values for Mandarin and Hakka word-initial stops /p, t, k, p, t, k/ followed by three vowels /i, u, a/ in different lexical tones revealed that lexical tone has significant influence on the VOT values for stops. The results are important as they suggest that future studies should take the influence of lexical tone into account when studying VOT values and when designing wordlists for stops in tonal languages. In Mandarin, stops’ VOT values, from the longest to the shortest, are in MR, FR, HL, and HF tones. This sequence is the same as in Liu, Ng, Wan, Wang, and Zhang (2008). Later, however, it was found that it is very likely that the sequence results from the existence of non-words. In order to produce non-words correctly, participants tended to pronounce them at a slower speed, especially those in MR tone. Therefore, we further examined the data without non-words, in which no clear sequence was found. For Hakka, post-hoc tests (Scheffe) show that aspirated stops in entering tones, which are syllables ending with a stop, have significantly shorter VOT values than they have in other tones. Although the tonal effects on VOT values are not consistently found in different sets of data, probably due to a methodology problem, the possibility of tonal effect on VOT values could not be excluded. Tonal effect, thus, should be taken into consideration in designing word lists for VOT studies. Moreover, further studies should include both real words and non-words in separate sets of word lists to verify the current study results.

The effect of tonal changes on voice onset time in Mandarin esophageal speech.

SUMMARY The present study investigated the effect of tonal changes on voice onset time (VOT) between normal laryngeal (NL) and superior esophageal (SE) speakers of Mandarin Chinese. VOT values were measured from the syllables /pha/, /tha/, and /kha/ produced at four tone levels by eight NL and seven SE speakers who were native speakers of Mandarin. Results indicated that Mandarin tones were ass...

Comparative investigation of peak alignment in Polish and German unit selection corpora

This paper presents a comparative study on the temporal alignment of pitch peaks of H*L accents in Polish and German. Speech material used in the study came from the unit selection synthesis corpora of the Polish voice module of the BOSS system and the IMS German Festival TTS system. The major factors investigated were concerned with the influence of syllable structure on the one hand, as well ...

Voice Onset Time merger and development of tonal contrast in Seoul Korean stops: A corpus study

This paper is an apparent-time study of sound change in a three-way laryngeal contrast of Korean stops. The data are drawn from a read speech corpus distributed by the National Institute of the Korean Language. Voice Onset Time (VOT) of sentence initial stops and f0 of the first two vowels of the sentence produced by 117 Seoul Korean speakers were measured to determine how VOT and f0 realizatio...

Effects of information structure, syllable structure, and voicing on nuclear falling pitch accents in German

Previous work showed that tonal alignment distinguishes information status (given/new), that syllable structure affects alignment and that the scaling and alignment of tones correlate with focus. We investigate the interaction of these effects on the tonal realization of nuclear falling accents in German. In a production experiment, syllable structure [± open syllable] and voicing of the follow...
