Search for low - mass PMS companions around X - ray selected late B stars
نویسنده
چکیده
We have observed 49 X-ray detected bright late B-type dwarfs to search for close low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) companions using the European Southern Observatory’s ADONIS (Adaptive Optics Near Infrared System) instrument. We announce the discovery of 21 new companions in 9 binaries, 5 triple, 4 quadruple system and 1 system consisting of five stars. The detected new companions have K magnitudes between 6.5 and 17.3 and angular separations ranging from 0.2 and 14.1 (182358 AU).

Late B-type stars and their candidate companions resolved with Chandra
We present the first results from a series of Chandra observations carried out with the aim to examine the origin of X-ray emission in main-sequence late B-type stars. X-ray detections of late-B and early A-type stars have remained a mystery as none of the two major theories for stellar X-ray emission applies in this spectral range: while Oand early B-type stars drive strong winds that are subj...
متن کاملTesting the companion hypothesis for the origin of the X-ray emission from intermediate-mass main-sequence stars
Context. The X-ray emission from B-type main-sequence stars is a longstanding mystery in stellar coronal research. Since there is no theory at hand that explains intrinsic X-ray emission from intermediate-mass main-sequence stars, the observations have often been interpreted in terms of (unknown) late-type magnetically active companion stars. Aims. Resolving the hypothesized companions requires...
متن کاملSpitzer-IRAC Search for Companions to Nearby, Young M Dwarfs
We present the results of a survey of nearby, young M stars for wide low-mass companions with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We observed 40 young M dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun, selected through X-ray emission criteria. A total of 10 candidate companions were found with IRAC colors consistent with T dwarfs. Extensive ground-based NIR follow-up observations rejected all these candidates....
متن کاملFurther X-ray detections of Herbig stars
Context. The interpretation of X-ray detections from Herbig Ae/Be stars is disputed as it is not clear if these intermediate-mass pre-main sequence stars are able to drive a dynamo and ensuing phenomena of magnetic activity. Alternative X-ray production mechanisms, related to stellar winds, star-disk magnetospheres, or unresolved late-type T Tauri star companions have been proposed. Aims. The c...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
