چکیده

The increased isocitrate consumption of isolated rat liver mitochondria brought about by the addition of L-malate is quantitatively accounted for by increases in the production of both a-ketoglutarate and citrate. The effect on citrate production is still observed under conditions such that the oxidation of isocitrate to a-ketoglutarate is completely inhibited. The specificity of the effect has been investigated, and it is shown that a number of dicarboxylic acids can stimulate isocitrate metabolism in a similar fashion. Marked stereospecificity is indicated by the fact that among the tartrate stereoisomers only the meso form is active.

Anaerobic induction of isocitrate lyase and malate synthase in submerged rice seedlings indicates the important metabolic role of the glyoxylate cycle.

The glyoxylate cycle is a modified form of the tricarboxylic acid cycle that converts C2 compounds into C4 dicarboxylic acids at plant developmental stages. By studying submerged rice seedlings, we revealed the activation of the glyoxylate cycle by identifying the increased transcripts of mRNAs of the genes of isocitrate lyase (ICL) and malate synthase (MS), two characteristic enzymes of the gl...

Pathway of carbon flow during fatty acid synthesis from lactate and pyruvate in rat adipose tissue.

The metabolism of pyruvate and lactate by rat adipose tissue was studied. Pyruvate and lactate conversion to fatty acids is strongly concentration-dependent. Lactate can be used to an appreciable extent only by adipose tissue from fasted-refed rats. A number of compounds, including glucose, pyruvate, aspartate, propionate, and butyrate, stimulated lactate conversion to fatty acids. Based on stu...

Differences between mouse and rat pancreatic islets: succinate responsiveness, malic enzyme, and anaplerosis.

Succinic acid methyl esters are potent insulin secretagogues in rat pancreatic islets, but they do not stimulate insulin release in mouse islets. Unlike rat and human islets, mouse islets lack malic enzyme and, therefore, are unable to form pyruvate from succinate-derived malate for net synthesis of acetyl-CoA. Dimethyl-[2,3-(14)C]succinate is metabolized in the citric acid cycle in mouse islet...

Effect of Pimpinella tirupatiensis on Oxidative Enzymes in STZ-induced Diabetic Rat Kidney

The present study was aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of Pimpinella tirupatiensis (Pt) by assaying the activities of selective mitochondrial enzymes in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Diabetic rats showed a significant (p < 0.01) reduction in the activities of oxidative enzymes Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), Malate dehydrogenase (MDH), Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) and isocitr...
