چکیده
Smart pumps that turn on in a standard mode (i.e., without any dose-checking), or that default to a standard mode, can also discourage compliance because it takes extra effort to switch the pump to the dose-checking mode and to access the library. Smart pumps that call for extra ef fort are more desirable than pumps that turn on in the standard mode because humans can always defeat technology if it is perceived to be a barrier.4 We can compare smart pump technology to a seat belt. Unlike airbags, which are no longer optional safety features that can be bypassed by the user, seat belts are optional equipment and, like dosechecking technology, can be bypassed despite a policy that may require their Mr. Grissinger is Director of Error Reporting Pro grams at the Institute for Safe Medication Practices in Horsham, Pa. Benefits and risks of using smart pumps to reduce medication error rates: a systematic review.
BACKGROUND Smart infusion pumps have been introduced to prevent medication errors and have been widely adopted nationally in the USA, though they are not always used in Europe or other regions. Despite widespread usage of smart pumps, intravenous medication errors have not been fully eliminated. OBJECTIVE Through a systematic review of recent studies and reports regarding smart pump implement...
متن کاملThe impact of traditional and smart pump infusion technology on nurse medication administration performance in a simulated inpatient unit
OBJECTIVE Assess the impact of infusion pump technologies (traditional pump vs smart pump vs smart pump with barcode) on nurses' ability to safely administer intravenous medications. DESIGN Experimental study with a repeated measures design. SETTING High-fidelity simulated inpatient unit. RESULTS The nurses remedied 60% of "wrong drug" errors. This rate did not vary as a function of pump ...
