The Contribution of Structural Break Models to Forecasting Macroeconomic Series

چکیده
This paper compares the forecasting performance of different models which have been proposed for forecasting in the presence of structural breaks. These models differ in their treatment of the break process, the model which applies in each regime and the out-of-sample probability of a break occurring. In an extensive empirical evaluation involving many important macroeconomic time series, we demonstrate the presence of structural breaks and their importance for forecasting in the vast majority of cases. We find no single forecasting model consistently works best in the presence of structural breaks. In many cases, the formal modeling of the break process is important in achieving good forecast performance. However, there are also many cases where simple, rolling window based forecasts perform well.

A Comparison of Forecasting Procedures for Macroeconomic Series: The Contribution of Structural Break Models
This paper compares the forecasting performance of different models which have been proposed for forecasting in the presence of structural breaks. These models differ in their treatment of the break process, the parameters defining the model which applies in each regime and the out-of-sample probability of a break occurring. In an extensive empirical evaluation involving many important macroeco...

This paper has two aims. The first is forecasting inflation in Iran using Macroeconomic variables data in Iran (Inflation rate, liquidity, GDP, prices of imported goods and exchange rates) , and the second is comparing the performance of forecasting vector auto regression (VAR), Bayesian Vector-Autoregressive (BVAR), GARCH, time series and neural network models by which Iran's inflation is for...
متن کاملThe Past, Present, and Future of Macroeconomic Forecasting
Broadly defined, macroeconomic forecasting is alive and well. Nonstructural forecasting, which is based largely on reduced-form correlations, has always been well and continues to improve. Structural forecasting, which aligns itself with economic theory and hence rises and falls with theory, receded following the decline of Keynesian theory. In recent years, however, powerful new dynamic stocha...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Impact of Structural Break on the Relationship between Inflation and Inflation Uncertainty in the Turkish Economy
This article examines the relationship between inflation and inflation uncertainty in the Turkish economy in this period 2004:01-2014:12. This relationship is explored in two ways: a) with the effect of structural breaks; b) without the effect of structural breaks. In fact, with regard to the main structural break have occurred over this period, we examine whether structural break has affected ...
متن کاملForecasting in the presence of recent and recurring structural change
Structural change is a major source of forecast failure. Immediately after a break, forecasting problems are particularly severe due to a lack of information about the new data generation process. Techniques exist for monitoring for structural change in real time, but the optimal post-break strategy is unexplored. We consider two approaches. First, monitoring for change and then combining forec...
