Meso-structure in three strong-lensing systems
نویسنده
چکیده
We map substructure in three strong lensing systems having particularly good image data: the galaxy lens MG J0414+053 and the clusters SDSS J1004+411 and ACO 1689. Our method is to first reconstruct the lens as a pixelated mass map and then substract off the symmetric part (in the galaxy case) or a projected NFW (for the cluster lenses). In all three systems we find extended irregular structures, or meso-structures, having of order 10% of the total mass. In J0414+053, the meso-structure suggests a tidal tail connecting the main lens with a nearby galaxy; however this interpretation is tentative. In the clusters the identification of meso-structure is more secure, especially in ACO 1689 where two independent sets of lensed images imply very similar meso-structure. In all three cases the meso-structures are correlated with galaxies but much more extended and massive than the stellar components of single galaxies. Such extended structures cannot plausibly persist in such high-density regions without being mixed; the crossing times are too short. The meso-structures therefore appear to be merging or otherwise dynamically evolving systems. Subject headings: gravitational lensing — galaxies: clusters: individual (SDSS J1004+411, ACO 1689)

Observation and Confirmation of Six Strong-lensing Systems in the Dark Energy Survey Science Verification Data
We report the observation and confirmation of the first groupand cluster-scale strong gravitational lensing systems found in Dark Energy Survey data. Through visual inspection of data from the Science Verification season, we identified 53 candidate systems. We then obtained spectroscopic follow-up of 21 candidates using the Gemini Multi-object Spectrograph at the Gemini South telescope and the ...
متن کاملGalaxy density profiles and shapes – II. selection biases in strong lensing surveys
Many current and future astronomical surveys will rely on samples of strong gravitational lens systems to draw conclusions about galaxy mass distributions. We use a new strong lensing pipeline (presented in Paper I of this series) to explore selection biases that may cause the population of strong lensing systems to differ from the general galaxy population. Our focus is on point-source lensing...
متن کاملCatalytic Behavior of Brønsted Acid Sites in MWW and MFI Zeolites with Dual Meso- and Microporosity
The catalytic behavior of Brønsted acid sites in three acidic zeolite materials (one MWW and two MFI zeolites) containing dual meso-/microporosity was studied using ethanol dehydration and monomolecular conversion of propane and isobutane as probe reactions. The meso-/microporous MWW zeolite, MCM-36 or pillared MWW, consists of a zeolitic layer structure, with independent microporosity and meso...
متن کاملThe CFHTLS Strong Lensing Legacy Survey: I. Survey overview and T0002 release sample
Aims. We present data from the CFHTLS Strong Lensing Legacy Survey (SL2S). Due to the unsurpassed combined depth, area and image quality of the Canada-France-Hawaii Legacy Survey it is becoming possible to uncover a large, statistically well-defined sample of strong gravitational lenses which spans the dark halo mass spectrum predicted by the concordance model from galaxy to cluster haloes. Met...
متن کاملGravitational Lensing in Galaxy Cluster Abell 1689
Synopsis In this thesis we have set out to study the galaxy cluster Abell 1689 using strong grav-itational lensing. Due to its relative closeness at redshift 0.18 and available archived deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging it presents an ideal opportunity to several diverse studies based on strong gravitational lensing. We start with a brief introduction to cosmology and general relativity as we...
